Do you round up?

Posted on 10/01/2025 8:12:40 PM PDT by Kevin in California

So I go to McDonalds maybe twice a year, if at all. Went today and placed my order at the self kiosk and when paying, there it was, the ole message of "would you like to round up?" If course, no! How long has Mickey D's been doing this and what cause is this money going to? For me, I don't round up because I can guarantee you there's no accountability for it. And, they get to write this "round up" money off their taxes

Ace Hardware does this same round up crap.

How come they don't round down?

I doubt the local animal rescue thrift store and the disabled adults thrift store are pocketing the extra 50 cents for ill gotten gains.

Was some computer genius a few years back. Took advantage of bank computer calculations which would round its numbers to nearest penny...but the real number had a value slightly more, or less more than just up to the penny. He programmed the banks computer to send the very small excess amount to his personal account. IIRC he had accumulated millions of dollars before he was discovered.

Was it this guy?

Regards,

Presumably this would be for the Ronald McDonald houses that take in parents of children with extended stays in hospitals so they can stay near their children. In general I’m _extremely_ skeptical of corporate “charity” these days, but the Ronald McDonald houses are an absolute blessing for poor and middle-class parents dealing with financial stress at the same time they are coping with children with cancer or in an ICU after a terrible traffic accident, etc. I’ve had personal experience with the one in Indy on that basis and so I’d give this a rare 2-thumbs up.

For all the charity that I give on April 15th, I have yet to get a thank you...so why should I give even more?

If it’s the USO I always do. The USO was there for me when I needed them.

Never! I doubt their veracity. Additionally, I prefer to give to charities of my choosing. Usually the businesses that ask me to “round up” are woke.

McDonalds would likely be rounding up for Ronald McDonald house. their charity for parents with really sick kiddos. Gets them a place to stay when kids are in the hospital. Drop boxes are at the drive through for change. The drop boxes have been there for years.

Never round up. You’re giving whatever corporation their own deduction. If you want to donate do it individually.

A friend recommends Round Up with a dash of 2,4,D and surfactant. I add Lazer to show coverage. Works good.

“How come they don’t round down?”

Because that would be customer appreciation. The customer appreciation business model went out of style 20 years ago.

You make a good point. My locat Giant food market does that and now I am wondering where the money goes.
According to GROK it to goes to:
USO
The Children's Cancer Foundation
Feeding America food bank

I am going to double check on the GIANT web site.

In the 90’s I work for a software company that wrote nonprofit software near DC. I would have to go down into DC and fix/install updates. The “noprofits” did not look like nonprofits, the top dogs were suited up, handsome, big oak desks, jewelry. The so called help, they all looked like porn stars, not a single fatty or old women. After seeing that I never give to charities, never.

It’s for the Ronald McDonald house which is a place families can stay when their children are in the hospital. I have stayed in one. I always round up.
