Paridhi Upadhaya was packing her bags after securing a computer science scholarship in the US until headlines of President Donald Trump's H-1B visa crackdown last week prompted her family in Lucknow, India, to scrap the plan.
“Trump's unending onslaught against immigrants is forcing us to consider other destinations for her,” the 18-year-old's father Rudar Pratap said.
Upadhaya is among thousands of Indians for whom the American dream of world-class education, lucrative careers, better quality of life and social mobility is turning sour due to rising US visa restrictions and policy unpredictability.
For decades the H-1B visa has been the gateway to a new life: a chance for young engineers and scientists from India, China and other countries to turn years of study into high-paying jobs and the possibility of permanent residency.

The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the launch of Project Firewall, an H-1B enforcement initiative that will safeguard the rights, wages, and job opportunities of highly skilled American workers by ensuring employers prioritize qualified Americans when hiring workers and holding employers accountable if they abuse the H-1B visa process.
“The Trump Administration is standing by our commitment to end practices that leave Americans in the dust. As we reestablish economic dominance, we must protect our most valuable resource: the American worker. Launching Project Firewall will help us ensure no employers are abusing H-1B visas at the expense of our workforce,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer. “By rooting out fraud and abuse, the Department of Labor and our federal partners will ensure that highly skilled jobs go to Americans first.”

When we run out of Americans who want to live The American Dream, then we can start handing it out to foreigners. In the meantime, maybe they should be working on building The Indian Dream, or The Chinese Dream, or Fill-In-The-Blank Dream.

Correct. I went to India in 1996, then in 2005 then in 2017 and each time the progress has been tremendous. Not super like my visits to Southetn China, but still impressive. The Indians have a long way to go, a very long way.
And this move by President Trump will help them move in this direction by keeping talent at home
The AMERICAN Dream is for AMERICANS. Indians only value America as a place to make money, at any price.
And whites lose out. Stem educated Americans are only 30%, at best, of hires and it is often for the low end of tech jobs. Indians are free to discriminate against whites and they do.
