In light of the rapid advancements that AI tools have made since the release of ChatGPT in late 2022, people have been pondering the potential of artificial intelligence to replace certain occupations, trying to figure out if and how the nascent technology will change the way people work.
And while the focus of discussions like this is often on the risk of certain jobs being replaced by emerging technologies, these shifts, as well as societal changes, usually offer new employment opportunities as well.
Think of the rise of e-commerce for example: while it has led to a decline in retail jobs and is projected to continue to do so, it has supported strong job growth in transportation and warehousing and still does. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment Projections, transportation and material moving will be among the faster-growing occupational groups for the coming decade as well, projected to add 580,000 jobs by 2034, with warehouse workers and truck drivers particularly in demand.
But as Statista's Felix Richter shows in the chart below, by far the biggest increase in employment is expected in the healthcare and social assistance sector, which is driven less by technological changes and more by demographic shifts.
You will find more infographics at Statista
Due to the ageing population and the growing prevalence of chronic conditions, the wider healthcare sector is projected to account for 1.7 million new jobs by 2034, making up one third of all new jobs expected by the end of the projection period.
Looking at individual occupations, this trend is also evident, with home health and personal care aids projected to be by far the fastest-growing occupation over the next decade, adding 740,000 jobs by 2034. With registered nurses, medical and health service managers as well as nurse practitioners also in the top 10, it’s clear that the health sector as a whole is going to be a major driver of employment growth in the near future.
“Yeop! My TOC is CNC systems for manufacturing. Learn CNC Machining and you’ll never be without a good paying job in any industrialized country in the world.”
3D Printing should be a job which would require many people. Think pre-fabs for affordable housing and the support that would be required for assembly.
I have no idea. No plumbers I know make 6 figures.
>> because AI makes logos like these:
ROFL! Pure comedy gold!
>> The average wage for plumbers is mid 60s. Google it.
I know a bunch of plumbers & electricians around here who by their lifestyle obviously earn 6 figures. They’re entrepreneurs, and they don’t share their incomes with Google.
The key for tradesmen upward mobility is to start your own enterprise.
Not everyone is up to it; the rest earn $60K. And send 30% back to Mejico. :-)
Where one plumbs makes a world of difference, most plumbers all over the nation are just blue collar guys who turn wrenches, but in some rich areas where highly skilled, personable, and intelligent service is required from professional type quality workmen, commission is often part of the job.
What got me to try plumbing was a commission of 50% of the labor, and 10% of the materials, that pay and working glamorous wealthy areas on the beaches with a lot of attractive females and very interesting customers, both of which were easily incorporated into my personal social life, made for a really nice job.
Ok whatever. That is one weird off the normal one off situation.

No kidding, they tend to play down their earnings and play modest, an odd thing about even successful plumbing companies is how many of the wealthy owners introduce themselves as a plumber rather than describe themselves like other businessmen and entrepreneurs do.
Service plumbers working on commission isn’t weird nor one off, and it makes for better service.
2D-3D CAD modelers and draftsman (Siemens NX, CATIA, Autodesk Inventor, Creo, etc.)?
You are right, I just expanded it a bit. Not everyone has the smarts and diligence to succeed at running a business. Those are the people who work for the business.
I was friends with the former president of the local community college.
Their number one graduate demand is auto body.
So much so that the local car dealerships are paying for students if they sign a contract to work for them when they graduate and during their education. They work at the dealership while they are going to school right down the street.
They also have a auto mechanic curriculum that graduates are in high demand. With the same work and school at the same time.
Plus this fall they started a program for air traffic controllers.
The FAA center for the NE is here in Nashua.
So, the CC program is hooked up with them on internships.
Hey, by serving all that fast food, those people in health care will have a steady flow of patients. That’s the beauty of it. Everybody gets work.
Should have been named “D Style”
It is weird and I have NEVER heard of it.
Auto body will go away because self-driving cars will never get in collisions.
Honestly, I don’t know whether to add a “/s” tag or not.
It will be just like the villages in which the Care Bears or Tele Tubbies live. The kind of economy that could win Friedman a Nobel Prize.
We will import Filipino nurses.
beware or ‘experts’ funneling people into specific careers. i remember the big guidance counselor scam of the 70s. high schoolers were told be just about every ‘expert’ that there would be a shortage in guidance counselors (gc), and steered students into seeking gc degrees. result was a double whammy - in 4 years there was a glut in gc degree earners seeking careers, and the economy tanked, leaving localities forced to cut costs, and school costs. guess which jobs got hit the hardest. so all these kids who got gc degrees ended up competing for fewer and fewer positions against people with experience. again - listen to the ‘experts; at your own risk
Commission is common in the repair plumbing world and so is keeping track of sales on a board back at the office.
If a plumber is going out on service calls and not making them profitable, then he gets fired, it is too expensive to win a new customer and then have some slug go out there and walk out with a simple service call and nothing really done, plumbers have to communicate with the customer, win the customer, take repairs to their full level of quality, and make sales.
Much work is found by simply asking the customer about other plumbing issues in their home after the initial work is done, perhaps the customer is curious about new products he’s heard about or has noticed something about his old water heater or whatever that he would like you to look at since you are already here, perhaps the plumber noticed that dripping hose bibb by the drive way, or that the water pressure seemed high when he flushed the toilet or turned on the tub.
Wow. turd chasers do such interesting work! So complicated.
