Apple Stops Signing iOS 18.6.2, iOS 26 Downgrades Now Impossible

Apple has stopped signing iOS 18.6.2, which means that if you've upgraded to iOS 26, you're no longer able to downgrade to a version of iOS 18. Apple released iOS 26 a week ago.

When software is "signed," it means that it has passed a server-side verification check that Apple performs when a new version of iOS is downloaded on an iPhone. An update can't be installed unless it passes the verification check.

Unsigning software prevents Apple customers from installing outdated, less secure versions of iOS.

Apple isn't forcing users to install ‌iOS 26‌, and there is an option to continue using iOS 18, but once a device has been upgraded to ‌iOS 26‌, there's no going back.

Apple has also stopped signing iPadOS 18.6.2 and tvOS 18.6, so there's also no downgrade option available for iPads.

It just works!

My 15 works just fine, and I rather like this see through thing. I don’t care if others don’t. 🤪

Question for iPhone users.
Does anyone know of a specific app for the iPhone that I can use other than the one that comes with the iPhone for collecting email?
I use CenturyLink for my email, and they did an upgrade a few months ago. Ever since then, I can’t see any of my emails through my iPhone email app.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

How very INTP. Love it.

Yep. 1982 Volvo. Brand new aluminum block engine. Picked up the car from its 1500-mile service, and while waiting on traffic to turn into my home, it poured all its oil out onto the highway. Blocked oil trace in the block, caused it to blow a couple of gaskets. We had other problems (ruined essential and expensive belts) later, caused by that, that warranty didn’t cover.

During the 4 years we had it, we had to replace the front driver side door handle twice, and the A/C fan once. The fan cost hundreds in labor to replace; it seems they built ‘em by placing the fan on the floor and building the car around it.

We had a 78 Volvo station wagon that was trouble-free for 200,000 miles before that.

I never upgrade an iOS or iPadOS until “dot one.”

AI answer:

Apple has announced a significant change to its operating system naming convention, moving away from its previous version-numbering system to a year-based system. Starting in 2026, the company will name its operating systems based on the year, with the current year’s version being designated as the 26th iteration. This change was officially announced during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 keynote. As a result, the upcoming releases will be named iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26. This new system simplifies the naming across Apple’s ecosystem, ensuring all devices will align on the same year-based version number. While the year-based numbering will be applied universally, future Mac operating systems will continue to feature California-themed names, such as Tahoe, alongside the new year-based number. This marks a departure from the previous system, where different operating systems had independent version numbers (e.g., iOS 18, macOS 15, ).

Apple should have been furiously working on releasing a fully developed, user-friendly product in the first place.

Apple has always used their initial release fanboy-mania as product beta testers. Why should that change now?

26.0.1 just downloaded. I’ll see if the new update fixed 26’s battery issue when I go to work in a couple of hours.

BUMP!
