They can side with either Trump or Putin. This will be a mutually exclusive choice, choosing both will not be an option.

US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York after blasting world leaders during his speech.
Speaking to reporters before the bilateral talks, Trump hailed Zelenskyy as a courageous leader.
"He’s a brave man, and he’s putting up one hell of a fight," Trump said. "We have about 30 meetings scheduled today, but this is an important one -- and we have great respect for the fight that Ukraine is putting up. It is pretty amazing."

I suspect that he's now getting accurate military assessments from US intel and the Pentagon because unlike the first term, no one is going to dare blow smoke up his butt this time.
Oops looks like all the mockery of Z here just ran into Trump.
But to be fair, Trump is shifting because Putin wouldn’t cooperate.
Trump recognizes that the US has a lot of power, and he’s willing to make “bad things happen” to those who don’t cooperate.
At the very least, he’s been convinced only serious threats can influence Putin.
So what did Trump leave out....He didn't write a big "L" on "Z"s forehead.

That is the sound of the US backing away.
Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win. This is not distinguishing Russia. In fact, it is very much making them look like “a paper tiger.” When the people living in Moscow, and all of the Great Cities, Towns, and Districts all throughout Russia, find out what is really going on with this War, the fact that it’s almost impossible for them to get Gasoline through the long lines that are being formed, and all of the other things that are taking place in their War Economy, where most of their money is being spent on fighting Ukraine, which has Great Spirit, and only getting better

Putin boasted to President Trump in Alaska that Russia would conquer the entirety of Donetsk by October 1st and it’s obvious that President Trump isn’t buying Putin’s nonsense.
Plus there’s Putin’s tax hike next week on Russians earning more than $1,000 a month along with the gas lines and rationing.
The world really doesn’t turn to your fantasies. But if you want to make up reality while Trump takes care of business, hopefully that makes you happy.
Trump was willing and probably is willing to let Russia have gains.
He was never going to allow the disaster of Ukraine being defeated.
He tried to end the war. Putin insisted on winning more. So now a different approach.

Contrary to what some think, I’ve never predicted a rosy Ukraine victory, or the collapse of Russia.
I just react to Putin lovers who insist Russia always wins.
Russia faces economic pressure, but I think Putin doesn’t care, just like he doesn’t care about losing soldiers.
He does care if some rival knocks him off. But he’s good at killing off threats.
Lots of other reasons he can just keep hanging on. Lots of unknowns.
I think Trump might be willing to provide a push.
