Special Presidential Envoy Keith Kellogg on Monday said he and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff recently advised President Trump that Russia is losing its war on Ukraine — as Moscow has seen more than 1 million casualties while taking less than 1% of Ukrainian territory since November 2022.
Speaking at the Yalta European Security Conference in Kyiv, Kellogg revealed he and the chairman, Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, each reassured the president of Moscow’s wilting position roughly six weeks ago — shortly before Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

“I responded quite forcefully, and I finally said, ‘Mr. President, don’t just listen to me. Your chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Dan Caine, is outside. He’s out in the hall, bring him in and ask him that question. He’s your senior, he’s your principal military adviser,'” Kellogg said.
“And he did, and Dan said the same thing. He went, ‘Nope, not winning.'”

I assume a guy like this doesn't talk about such things publicly unless the administration wants it out there. Probably I give him too much credit, as a lot of guys have gone rogue on Trump in the past. But let's assume Trump himself wants it out there. Why?

The Russians are losing a lot of men and supplies but they are taking ground. Not much but enough to keep them encouraged to keep forging ahead.

The Ukrainians believe the Russians are trying to mass 150K troops in Donetsk after hoarding a few months worth of armored vehicle production.
With Ukrainian drones operating 40Km behind the lines, missiles and an active sabotage network in Donetsk, sounds like an Ardennes offensive in the making.

The primary form of encouragement for Russian officers is to avoid being sent to the front lines themselves or imprisoned.
That’s why I want to see this war ended. I don’t care about Russian demands for this or that policy on a sovereign state, nor Ukrainian territories lost.
Russia is simply bleeding our Russian men, which, given their demographic crisis, is a horrible thing for their future—just end it!
Ukraine territories lost to Russia will never be regained by fighting—just end it!

Taking land is currently the second ranked priority to Russia at this point. The top two priorities will switch automatically when the first has been accomplished to Putin’s satisfaction.
The United States could invade Russia and take the entire country over in a matter of months. There is no doubt about that fact. Russia doesn’t even have an aircraft carrier... Their military is antiquated and rundown and Putin’s ill-fated and ill-advised invasion of the Ukraine has brought Russia’s military to it’s knees.
Putin’s Ukrainian invasion has weakened Russia to the point of no return and Russia will never be the same again when it comes to military preparedness.
Step One in “kicking ass” should be making artillery shells, especially 3 years after the war started.
Instead, all we get is fiascos.
