'Typical Act of Unilateral Bullying': China Slams US Proposal for Tariffs on Russian Oil Purchasers

Beijing called Washington's proposal for the G7 and NATO nations to impose tariffs on China and other nations that purchase Russian oil a "typical act of unilateral bullying" and "economic coercion" on Monday, threatening retaliatory actions if the proposal is implemented.

According to PTI, as the US and Chinese delegations reassembled in Spain on Monday for the second day of their discussions on trade and economic matters, China rejected the US drive.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Lin Jian stated during a routine news briefing that China's regular energy and economic cooperation with nations worldwide, including Russia, is acceptable, legal, and above reproach.

Lin's comments came in response to reports that the US has urged G7 and NATO countries to impose tariffs on China over its Russian oil purchases, seeking to pressure Beijing's stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“The US move is a typical act of unilateral bullying and economic coercion, which seriously undermines international trade rules and threatens the security and stability of global industrial and supply chains,” Lin said.

They could try and end the war and then go back buying all the oil they want.

No one is forcing China but, if you have the leverage, you use it. XI and his cohorts know that. They would do the same. Sucks not to have leverage.

This is a quite interesting series of events in geopolitics. Power factions forming in new ways, as power is applies by the powerful, one against another. Not just a matter of public relations and media narratives.
"Despite a range of sanctions and the threat posed by dependence on Russian energy, in the third year of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, EU imports of Russian fossil fuels in particular remain largely unchanged, totalling EUR 21.9 bn, a 6% year-on-year drop in value but merely a 1% year-on-year drop in volumes."

That last link is a doozy, because Turkey is a NATO member, as well as the second largest military after the US in NATO. Meanwhile, the loudest barking comes from some of the "Coalition of the Willing" folks, who aren't marching into battle -- yet.

Isn't media interesting, these days?

If Trump really wanted to bankrupt Russia, he does not need tariffs. All he has to do is prevent American banks and financial institutions from doing any business with companies and even countries that defy sanctions. Might start a war or a depression but it would work.

Think of the Monumental hypocrisy because all of those countries also make loud noises about not using fossil fuels. So they help to destroy the world in multiple ways because really they are just greedy pigs.

Of course the shame is we had Biden and some of our states preventing the export of natural gas and oil from the United States which could be a substitute for Russian oil.

The left impoverishes people, gets people killed, and damages the National Security of Their Own countries.

--- "Think of the Monumental hypocrisy because all of those countries also make loud noises about not using fossil fuels."

Capitalized M. I agree with the editorial.... Then there's the following, to further flesh out that Monument....

List of US Imports From Russia as Trump Threatens Secondary Tariffs Newsweek, 14 June 2025

U.S. Imports From Russia Hit $2.1 Billion this year Eurasia Business News, 15 July 2025

U.S. imports fuel from India that's made from Russian oil NPR, 8 September 2025

Factbox-US and Europe do billions in trade with Russia despite sanctions Yahoo!Finance, 15 September 2025

It is my distinct impression that the headlines tell a most theatrical tale, stealing some Shakespearean parlance.

It is my view that President Trump is trying to negotiate -- in the sense of maneuvering through a minefield -- various political stances, from hardened militarism to the use of soft power, as through the practical through to the proponents of "zero emissions" (which is an illogical folly), and from the stiff-necked proftis-above-all folks to those less aggressive. It's a tough road for him, and I suspect he is up for it. Who is not up for the slog in the long run? Some of our European "allies" as the news features all sorts of wobbly political realities there.

Quite a Monument. Some hypocrisy might be necessary to prop the whole, but that "coalition of the willing" stuff which isn't so willing is just bit players on the stage as great powers collide. So do I see things.
