SEN RAND PAUL: The GOP once knew how to fix the deficit — now they’re losing the battle
Fox News ^ | Sep 10 | Senator Paul

Posted on 09/10/2025 5:20:21 AM PDT by RandFan

GOP leaders historically argued spending cuts, not tax increases, should address national debt

"... In the meantime, Republicans should take with a grain of salt increased revenue and ask themselves whether the goal is to balance a bloated budget with increased taxes or instead limit the size and scope of government. This important question once differentiated conservatives from liberals — I hope the current fad for import taxes doesn’t entice all conservatives to forget the goal of a small, constitutional federal government."

When did the GOP ever know how to control spending?

Newt Gingrich and the Congressional Republicans did manage to balance the budget in the late '90s.

Then, George W. Bush started pushing "compassionate" conservatism and that destroyed any fiscal discipline the party had.

Or let tariffs supplement SS and MC.

Paul digs his hole deeper. Trump does know how to reduce the deficit & Paul fights him at every turn. Gaslighting is a tool Paul uses well.

Rand is every bit frustrating as the GOP.

He’s a phony, plain and simple. He is a huge part of the problem.

I have had that exact thought. It is inconceivable that someone not related to, or a crony of, could ardently defend Paul’s record and hypocrisy so unwaveringly.

The Bush disaster, however, led to Obama and supermajority by Democrats that led to Obamacare and other spending that has been irreversible.

You have been gullibly sucked in because of what amounts gross ignorance. Enlightenment may be complicated and not even possible especially since you seem to have a strong anti trade political bias.

The US exports all kinds of goods. The world is the customer. There are American sales people literally in all corners of the worls beating the bushes to sell their goods.

The balance if trade is Im pretty sure negative. That is what President Trump is all about. Trump is not a globalist but rather an Americanist who is intent on selling American products all over the globe and reversing that trend. He is putting the world on notice to cease their tariffs on American goods and reduce or eliminate petty trade barriers to American products.

Canada is one of the worst offenders. Tariffs on out exports and tons of rules aimed at American products reduce our exports to Canada. That is in flux because the four western provinces are right on the verge of leaving Canada and becoming a separate nation that might become an American territory and some day at least one state.

It seem to me that in your state of general trade ignorance you lack the background to discuss or understand the Presidents pro trade policy of which tariffs are merely a tool. You certainly lack the trade comprehension to question my motives.

“Gross Ignorance” in global trade? I worked for almost two decades for muti-billion dollar GLOBAL corporations. I understand better than most, the taxes and trade barriers involved in international trade as I had to overcome them on a routine basis. I have had to account for VAT taxes and credit transfers in EU countries, Nota Fiscal documents in Brazil, etc., so I have real life experience in what we are discussion here. Real life experience overcoming the regulations other countries have instituted. And don’t get me wrong, the US is a nightmare for foreign countries to deal with because we have 50 different states, all with regulations that need to be adhered to. Your insults not only prove your ignorance on this topic but failed to deflect from the absurdity of your ramblings. If anyone is ignorant enough to sit out the trade discussion, its you bert. You certainly lack the trade comprehension to start a meaningful debate.

I have fifty years involvement in all aspects of international trade.

You started the insults by asking what I considered to be questions derived from ignorance. You made the greatest insult by questioning my motives.
