People who post about their books are long standing FReepers who also contribute to this website, and the books are tangential to a free republic. Writers usually also invite FReepers to review or help write the books. Matt Bracken, FReeper Travis McGee, did it back in 2001. Lots of Freepers thanked in his forward too. LS also did this. He also gave away copies of his book.

Lots of writers here, but not writers who only use FR for their own advertising.

The anti-solicitation rule actually makes sense to me. We aren't trying to let FR morph into an advertising site, right?

That said, there are behaviors that are a lot less solicitous. They seem okay. You can mention you wrote a book-- the Writer's Guild has many mentions from many authors -- just don't point directly to it.
