LONDON (AP) – Rick Davies, the lead singer and co-founder of British band Supertramp, has died after a long battle with cancer, the band said Monday. He was 81.
Davies, who co-wrote the band’s music with Roger Hodgson, was “the voice and pianist behind Supertramp’s most iconic songs, leaving an indelible mark on rock music history,” the band said in a statement on its website.
He died Saturday after battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, for more than a decade, the band said.
Davies and Hodgson formed Supertramp in 1969, and produced hits including “Goodbye Stranger” and “The Logical Song.” The band’s 1979 album “Breakfast in America” topped charts in the United States and Canada, won two Grammys and sold over 18 million copies.
Davies’ “soulful vocals and unmistakable touch on the Wurlitzer became the heartbeat of the bands’ sound,” the statement said.

Is it too late to use the “I guess he’s not coming down for breakfast in America today” line?
Or too early?
Got to see Supertramp play at Rutgers U (1979) Breakfast in America Tour. I vaguely remember a gorilla chasing a giant banana around a patio table & chairs.
Also got to see Roger Hodgson play at Park Casino just before the COVID lockdowns.
I knew him and his wife Sue for many years when they still lived in Encino. Saw him right before he moved to New York. Very nice people and his wife was band manager.
saw a couple times. knew Rick and Sue personally and got backstage passes and after party passes last time I saw them at Universal Ampitheater
LOL (You might burn in hell for that!)
Saw them in Philly at the Spectrum after “Breakfast in America” was released. One hell of a show. They were the only band with members from Cheap Trick as special guests doing some singing.Great visuals with their music on a screen behind them. The crowd loved them! Good times!
The piano intro to “Fool’s Overture”.
I saw ELO in 1979 at the Garden...i really liked the band at the time but was not impressed with their live show
IIRC, they played recorded orchestral arrangements along with their live guitars and other instruments and were sued by some disgruntled ticket holders..............
One of my favorites as well.
And “Give a Little Bit” was my favorite song not on this album.
RIP
“There’s so much that we need to share
So send a smile and show you care”
Great tunes. RIP Rick Davies.
i just checked my stubs which i still have- it was 1978...
In 1978 i saw the following bands at the Garden:
Kansas- great
Genesis- incredible
Yes- very good
ELO- eh
Queen- eh (they were much better in 1977)
She died September 10, 2017 at the age of 96.
I saw Yes on that same tour, “Yes In-The-Round”. It was the most boring concert I ever saw.....................
Started to listen to “Hide in Your Shell” as a remembrance
Their best song, IMHO. I much preferred Hodgson’s songs to Davies’ songs.
I saw Yes on that same tour, “Yes In-The-Round”.
I am one of the few that thinks the Drama album was better than their previous few albums, with Anderson.
Saw them in concert at the height of their fortunes, the Breakfast in America Tour, it was love at first sight. Spin that platter and raise a glass of oj in memory tonight.
Deeply saddened for the loss of such a fine musical talent. My favorite band and unfortunately Rick and Roger will never reunite now. Great catalog of work from both of them. RIP Rick.
