Lane Kiffin Apologizes to Ole Miss Bettors After Kentucky Hits Late Field Goal to Cover Spread

Ole Miss was close to a win and cover, but Kentucky kicked down the back door with a late field goal Robby Kalland

By Robby Kalland 3 hrs ago • 1 min read A year ago, Ole Miss missed out on the College Football Playoff due in no small part to an ugly home loss to Kentucky early in the season. On Saturday, the Rebels went to Lexington seeking a bit of revenge and found themselves in a dog fight again, trailing 10-0 early, before rallying to a 30-23 win.

The line moved from Ole Miss as a 10.5-point favorite to closing as an 8.5-point favorite on the road. Those that got Ole Miss late had visions of going to cover town when the Rebels went up 30-20 late in the fourth quarter, but Kentucky coach Mark Stoops had other ideas.

The Wildcats drove it into Ole Miss territory on their final drive and opted to kick a 39-yard field goal to cut the deficit to seven points with eight seconds left in the game. That gave themselves a chance at a miracle if they recovered an onside kick and completed a Hail Mary, but at minimum it gave the home fans a cover of every number.

After the game, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin -- always aware of the spread -- gave a knowing apology to Ole Miss bettors that laid it with the Rebels, closing his postgame interview by saying: "Sorry to a lot of gamblers there at the end."

Mike Florio is a despicable leftwing socialist with a questionable IQ that often pushes fake gossip on his website to get clicks.

I followed spectator sports for about 50 years with an annual Super Bowl watch with a close friend being the last thing I did regularly. The close friend passed away a year before covid hit. Sports for me died with him. I’ve watched virtually nothing since. FR threads are about all I have left to know what is going on.

There were several sarcastic comments in that Lane Kiffen post-game interview.

You may as well be betting on a Wrastling match… Same diff. Preordained outcomes, they know who’s going to win and you don’t, and you’re betting on it.

Way back in my teens, as we argued whether wrestling was real or faked, my basic question was, “Can you bet on wrestling?”

Of course no, because it was fake or scripted, unlike the pre-Superbowl era NFL. Yes, NFL has changed, but outcomes are not as predetermined as you seem to think. (IMHO) And you still cannot bet on pro wrestling.

The Vols fans collectively prayed that kick through the uprights.

Derrick Henry’s fumble last night late, will do nothing to dispel the thinking that the NFL is scripted.

Whoa! I thought that game was in the bag for the Nevermores when it was 40-25.

I got sucked into Fantasy Football this year, and luckily I had Allen as my QB.

Since it looks like my Lions are going to suck this year, I may just root for the Bills.

A lot of Bills fans left early.

I was upset my team was starting a 41-year-old QB, and then he throws 4 TDs in his first game. Go figure.

Nobody in my league took Rodgers, so I’m thinking of picking him up.

I’m always confused by these moronic gambling stories... for every person angry about not covering a spread is another person VERY happy about the spread not being covered. You can literally choose either side of the number. Just because one person chose the option that got rubbed out at the end doesn’t mean that the joy of those who just barely got to that same number at the very end should be ignored. Don’t apologize for the “bad beats”, say a sincere “you’re welcome” to those who chose the other side of there exact same figure!

Derrick Henry’s fumble last night late, will do nothing to dispel the thinking that the NFL is scripted.

Horse apples. No rational coach on earth would have done anything but hand the ball to King Henry for the final 10 minutes of the game, to run out the clock and enjoy the 15 point victory. He had 182 yds already and was averaging 9.5 yds any time he touched the ball. Had Harbaugh called up ANY other play, and a turnover resulted, the sporting world would have mocked him for a decade for going to anyone but Henry. You don't risk the MVP QB, you don't risk throwing the ball or stopping the clock, and RB2 Ali wasn't getting first downs. Henry was the proper choice.

Oh I know, it’s not scripted, but those who do think it is will be convinced it was.

Wish Billy Napier would have thought that way, instead of passing with 3 minutes left in the game, when they had a Running Back that was tearing through them.
