A former Kentucky sheriff charged with killing a county judge remained in an “active state of psychosis” days after the shooting and battled with jail staff, who had to use pepper spray on him, according to recently filed court documents.
Former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines is charged with killing District Judge Kevin Mullins in his chambers nearly a year ago, shocking the small eastern Kentucky community that twice elected Stines as sheriff. Widely viewed security camera footage from Mullins’ chambers shows a man police identified as Stines pointing a gun and firing at Mullins.
The ex-sheriff has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder of a public official. Stines’ lawyers filed a transcript this week of the grand jury testimony by a state police detective in the case, along with other documents.

From what I’ve read this judge had it coming.
L
Is that better, or worse, than the "murder of an innocent civilian?"
By extension, is that better, or worse, than the murder of a child? An infant? Abortion?
When everything is said and done, I suspect this story will have as many twists and turns as the Murdaugh killings in South Carolina.
As I understand it, if someone is willing to kill a public official, that makes them even more of a threat to the public at large......that’s the idea anyway.
Hopefully Dateline does an episode about the motive but it’s not Who done it, a why do it
The judge had it coming.
Has it ever been stated why the Sheriff did this? Was there a long-standing beef between the two?
IIRC, the judge was having some hanky panky with the sheriff’s minor daughter?
As i understand it, judge mullins, a deputy (Ben Fields, who has been convicted) and other judicial officials were forcing female inmates to trade sexual favors in return for favourable legal treatment. Reortedly, the judge, among others, can be seen on video having sex with inmates in his chambers.
Stines was deposed in a civil lawsuit just 3 days before the shooting. Evidently he wasnt a participant, but he is accused of negligence in the suit since it was his deputy that was convicted.
Downgrade the charges to unlawful discharge of a weapon, and fine him a dollar.
Of all those, “murder of a public official” is the least heinous.
I pray the fella gets off if they are able to prove what the Judge was alleged to have done.
Yet when a public official crosses the line that public official is treated cordially and very softly regarding incarceration and care.
It is insane!!
If he shot someone in a position of legal authority extorting sexual favors from women in the justice system, I'd vote to give the fella a medal, rather than punishment.
Was the judge a DemoKrat?
Isn’t this the case where the Sheriffs daughters phone number was in the judges phone contacts?
An excellent story! H. Beam Piper was seriously under-rated for story telling.
I heard that
