There could have been negligence.
Did the hatch and vent pipe fail because of improper maintainence?
I don’t know if it did, but if so, that would be negligence.

If a particular crew member was negligent, then why wasn’t it noticed by superiors, why didn’t they inspect and test more regularly and thoroughly, why wasn’t the crew trained properly, why didn’t they address a lack of discipline or thoroughness that had crept in, why did they hire the wrong guy, etc....

When something goes wrong on a ship, there is NO avoiding accountability. If the captain didn’t know, then he should have.

Covered in the video. If you are this curiousu, just watch the damned video. I listened while working, thought it was worthwhile and posted it for history buffs. It’s worth your time, but I’ve given all of my time that I’m going to.

It’s amazing you see no legitimacy in anything I said.

You have NO IDEA whether the crew was completely not culpable but you insist absolutely they are not.

You’re putting words in my mouth. I said no such thing. I told you to watch the video if you want to know more. That’s the end of my involvement in it. The crew did not neglect to fasten the clamps. The clamps, however, were worn and gave way. How that happened? Watch the video and form your own conclusions about the crew, the owners and managers, or whatever. I don’t GAGS.

I don’t know if you know this, but lots of documentaries draw incorrect overbroad and unwarrented conclusions.

Just because a documentary has an authoritative voice and mood music doesn’t mean you should shut off your brain and reflexively believe everything they say.

The fact that a hatch or vent failed doesn’t mean the crew were not culpable at all.

Did a crew member express concern about the vulnerability and it was ignored? They don’t know.

Were the failures of equipment partly due to improper maintenance or management deciding not to spend as much on repairs or replacement?
They don’t know.

It’s absolutely absurd to make a blanket statement that the crew had no culpability of any kind based on the evidence at hand.

I’m not accusing them of anything, just saying any REAL investigation would raise these questions to make deaths less likely in the future.

It’s not good enough to say the equipment failed and presumptively declare the people involved were perfect and couldn’t have done anything better.

The documentary was interesting. Its conclusion regarding the clamps and the vent pipe is plausible. Other than that, I don’t GAGS, so stop trying to suck me into a debate. Watch the documentary. Form your own conclusions, and don’t tell me about them. I don’t care.

I don’t know if you know this, but I have a f@#$ing life. You should try it. I didn’t read your entire post, and I don’t intend to. The condescending tone of your first paragraph was a big turnoff.

“I have no interest in debating you,”

Good.

“go try your grumpy act on someone else.”

Act? I don’t suffer fools at all, except for visiting relatives.

“I’m sharing my thoughts on what was posted, that is what we do here on free republic.”

And I never said that the crew was blameless. I don’t know. They might have some share in the responsibility for allowing crucial equipment to deteriorate. They might not. At this point, what difference does it make.

The shoal was not the cause, and neither was there a freak wave. It was the clamps and the vent pipe, which were in place but insufficient for the weather. And maybe, just maybe, the hold was overladen, which would be the captain’s fault, or the owners’. But the documentary does not touch on that subject. OK?

The maxim “the prudent mariner pays heed to adverse weather forecasts” emphasizes that a wise and cautious sailor prioritizes safety by constantly monitoring and acting on predicted marine conditions. By doing so, they can avoid danger and protect their vessel, crew, and cargo.
This timeless advice is critical because:
Marine weather can change rapidly, transforming calm seas into rough, dangerous ones with little notice.
Adverse weather poses serious risks at sea, including high winds, powerful waves, and poor visibility from fog or heavy rain.
Ignoring forecasts endangers lives and increases the risk of disasterous circumstances.

This disaster was completly avoidable.

Book of Proverbs 16:18 states, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall”

It was pride that killed off the Edmond Fitzgerald and took those 29 souls on-board!

Including the boatswain, who might have overlooked flaws in the clamps, or the captain or owners, who might have denied the request of the watchful boatswain for new clamps, or the evil owners, who excpected the ship to founder so they could collect insurance money, and planned for it by keeping rusty, cracked clamps in place, or overloading the hold, or both. Everybody who could inform us of these issues is either dead or unwilling to answer.

As mentioned in the documentary, modern cargo ships now have multiple layers of safety precautions. Weather is also much more predictable, and communications are light years ahead of what was available in 1974, before microchips, GPS, AI, satellite networks, and the Internet.

This disaster was completly avoidable.

The weather forecasts were accurate. It wasn’t the stone age, no one wet their finger to test the conditions. There was data, satellite imagery, accurate forecasting etc... were they ignored? I doubt that. A decision to proceed was foolishly reached. It was a gamble and not a surprise... and conclusively a stupid business decision.

Being out to sea, for long durations, I can understand shipping getting caught in adverse weather scenarios, but in the Great Lakes, there’s no excuse.

SS Edmund Fitzgerald departed from Superior, Wisconsin, on the afternoon of November 9 and was expected to reach its destination of Detroit, Michigan, on November 11. This means the trip was scheduled to take approximately two days.

The old saying that “a ship in harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are for” applies to navel warships, not commercial shipping on short runs down to Detroit.

Two days. Remaining tied up at port would have been the prudent choice.

Similar discussion in The Perfect Storm (book, though the movie is also great).

“Similar discussion in The Perfect Storm (book, though the movie is also great).”

We were tied up in Newport RI during that event and went south in its wake. It was still very rough out. Came north up behind Hugo... towering swells and that was 4 or 5 days afterwards. But the Bering sea in winter was ungodly at times. Went up towards the Pribilof Islands early spring in ‘77 it was FAC (flat assed calm), really wasn’t expecting that, you could smell the seal and walrus rookeries a good 50 miles away and it took your breath away.

Probably got caught between two big wave peaks and just cracked open.

I have read that the ship was longer than the lake deep. It one end struck the bottom while the other was still floating, and it broke in half. The weight of the iron ore was more than the structure could handle in that fashion.

The entire AI schtick is pure bullshit, it was high resolution submarine photography.

It seems as though AI's primary function right now is to repeat things that are already known and make them sound more important or urgent. Like Sigourney Weaver's character in Galaxy Quest.

Seriously, I'm already sick of these AI video creations where the "intelligence" can't choose a pronunciation for a simple word like "bow" and remain consistent throughout.
