Two people have died in Louisiana after contracting flesh-eating bacteria from raw oysters, and state officials warned of an increase in cases.
The oysters were infected with Vibrio vulnificus, a type of bacteria found in coastal waters and peaking in May through October when temperatures are warmer. People can be sickened when eating raw or undercooked shellfish, especially oysters.
This year, 17 cases of Vibrio vulnificus have been reported in Louisiana as of July 31, and four have died. Salmonella outbreak linked to recalled eggs; 95 sick since January
“During the same time period over the previous 10 years, an average of seven Vibrio vulnificus cases and one death have been reported each year in Louisiana,” the Louisiana Health Department said in a news release.
In addition to eating raw or undercooked shellfish, exposing an open wound to coastal waters can also put an individual at risk.
Symptoms of infection include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever and chills.
(Char grilled oysters from Dragos in NOLA are fully cooked and perfectly safe to eat same for the only real oysters Rockefeller at Antoine’s in the Quarter again NO ONE EKESE ON EARTH has real oysters Rockefeller other than Antoine’ they invented them and only they know the real greens they use which is NEVER spinach.)
I concur totally.
Thanks. Sent menu to my daughter. She understands foods and flavors, as my father did. I just cook what’s easy and healthful. So boring.I sometimes forget to eat.
We should eat at Antoine’s every night. First trip I’ve taken anywhere in many years, she’s always going somewhere
If you have time, try to go to the WW2 Museum. You’ll be amazed at all to see.

NOLA has the best food on Planet Earth. Period.
“Always a risk in eating raw oysters.”
In my youth I ate them and loved them. They are delicious. After taking courses in bacteriology I no longer ate them raw but still enjoy them cooked.
If one wants to enjoy the best cooked oyster ever I recommend “Oysters Drago” at the restaurant of the same name, in New Orleans at the foot of Canal Street and the river.
Attached below is a recipe and as it is charbroiled there is no danger of bacterial disease. It is wonderful.
If in New Orleans do not miss the mom and pop restaurants in neighborhoods. They are often a small retail grocery store. Their menus are limited but they cook the very best. Their customers are their neighbors and they do not want to hear them say, “Boudreaux, this is not as good as before.” Those mom and pop places are of reasonable prices. They always have a red checked plastic table cloth. Food is good in New Orleans.

Terrific, thanks. They have GUMBO, love it.
Sent menu to my daughter, the foodie in the family.
They’re not as pricey as the other restaurants mentioned above. Don’t forget to go to Pat O’Briens and sit by the famous fountain on the patio out back.
I have always heard you only eat raw Gulf oysters in months that have an “r” in their name.
Elephant boogers on a half shell.
Right. I don't think I've ever ate oysters from the Gulf.
I’ve eaten lots of raw meat and fish here in Japan but the only shellfish I’ll eat raw is fresh uni which I ate the other evening at our favorite sushi/izakaya restaurant . Tried raw oysters once back in the US , didn’t get it . Fried fine .
I love uni!
We eat here every Friday ! It’s in Kosa City in Kumamoto , Prefecture , about 20 minutes from our home .
Yum. That octopus looks great, the fish with the big, spiky fin a bit scary.
Do they have waxed models of the sushi in their window?
Acme Oyster House for the grilled oysters.
And a cold Abita Purple Haze.
You’re welcome.
