We had a friend who’s daily player violin was built in 1756.

Yep. I did notice that several of the stolen instruments were Stradivarious violins.

That is correct. And trying to fill a hole in one’s heart and soul with $$$ is folly, regardless of one’s wealth. Such attempts divert us from God, and leave us depleted.

How John Fogerty got his guitar back is kind of similar story. His wife tracked it down and gave it him as a Christmas present, 44 years after he gave it away.

That is why I usually buy mid range guitars and then spiff them up. I have an MIM Strat that’s as good as any strat out there. I am out less than $700 if it is stolen.

No mention of Bob Dylan’s famous Newport concert electric guitar.

and whether colectors [sic] have a moral duty to return instruments to their owners. How about a legal responsibility, as in "receiving stolen property."

Keep em oiled up and you can play them for centuries. I don't think I'd want to live for centuries.

The proper quote is “The love of money is the root of all evil.” It's an important distinction. These instruments are beloved because of the perfection of their tones. That they have accrued value over the generations is a by-product of the love of music. Agreed, the thefts are despicable.
