A Florida man sentenced to death for raping and murdering a 13-year-old girl did the state a favor last week — by killing himself before it could execute him, officials said.
Matthew Caylor, 50, had been on death row for 16 years for raping and fatally strangling Melinda Hinson in 2008.
"Matthew Caylor was a sexual predator that had violated his parole in Georgia and came down here for a last hurrah in Bay County,” Basford said. “After a trial and numerous appeals, he knew he was facing the same inevitable fate as Kayle Bates.
“By committing suicide, he saved the taxpayers of Florida a lot of money.”

Every single occupancy holding cell and every long-term prison cell should be equipped with a substantial hook or bar and a length of rope. That could save us hundreds of millions of dollars every year. That guy had to be fed and clothed for 16 years before ending it.
I hope he did it because he had been raped and beaten so many times he couldn’t take it anymore.
I’m afraid not....death row inmates in Florida are segregated and only allowed out of their cell a few hours a week.

I only know that because I’ve been on death row here a couple of times while serving in my church’s prison ministry......that was quite an experience.
