“I’ve come to the conclusion that we’ve been sold a bill of goods.”
“And the bill of goods was called multiculturalism.”
So said liberal evolutionary biologist, researcher, ex-academic, and now podcaster and commentator Brett Weinstein. He made his comments recently during a very intellectual discussion with famed clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, part of which was posted Friday to the latter’s YouTube channel. And the two men essentially issued a warning, albeit in the most highbrow tone. To wit:
Multiculturalism threatens Western civilization itself by prioritizing differences (read: diversity) over unity. If it is not “canceled,” the West very well may be.
The video clip opens with Weinstein, brother of famed mathematician and podcaster Eric Weinstein, expounding upon that “bill of goods.” He stated that the
problem with multiculturalism is that it sounds like something that those of us who like to interact with people from many different cultures should appreciate. But it’s in fact the opposite of … the value that we actually hold. The value that we actually hold I would call Western cosmopolitanism…. Multiculturalism is the idea that people should not join our societies, but they should maintain their own traditions in an isolated pocket, and that we should effectively reject the idea of becoming one people in the West.
At this point, Peterson interjected and pointed out that this ideology ignores
the fact that if you bring people together and reduplicate the situation of the world at large with no uniting meta-narrative … you also bring in all of the conflict.
Put simply, and as has been said, bring enough of “there” here, and here becomes there. For example, import the Third World, become the Third World.
Peterson went on to say that this multiculturalist error is “fueled by … an underlying materialism.” He continued:

Woah! Nothing gets past this guy! Way to go, Brett. Everybody learns at their own pace, I always say.
Always remember - some ideas are so stupid, only an intellectual could believe them.

You sure bought into it in a hell of a hurry.
I remember the articles in National Review, warning about the rising trend of “muliticulturalism,” back in the late 1970s and through the ‘80s.
I wish I still had my stacks of old NRs so I could look up those articles, and find the names of the pseudo-intellectuals (mostly in European universities, at first) that were pushing the “movement.” I’d like to use Google to find out what became of them.
The “critical theory” movement, and “deconstructionism,” arose at about the same time.
The article is a bit misleading.
Weinstein has had a podcast with videos of Portland Pride parades grooming kids for the past few years.
He shows them for those who don’t realize how insane the left is.
There has to be cultural compatibility, with priority given to the original culture of the nation and then to successive compatible grafts.
Incompatible newcomers need to depart of their own accord and be tossed out if they don’t depart within the legislatively allocated time.
I’m a high school grad and I knew this 20 years ago.......I guess it’s true......common sense ain’t so common these days.
Chances are this guy has been living his whole adult life in the liberal bubble of “higher learning” with very little real world experience.
Once upon a time, 2 things were widely known:
1) Immigrants from all over the world came to America and made it a great country. They werre processed through Ellis Island or other official ports of entry. They arrived, they assimilated, they became Americans. It was good for everyone.
2) The Austro-Hungarian Empire was a large, but weak European country. It had too many ethnic groups: Austrians, Czechs, Hungarians, Serbs, Croats, Germans, Albanians, Bosnians, Muslims, Christians, Jews, etc. The people in the empire were moving in a 1000 different directions, and the nation itself had no cohesion because each ethnic group was focused on its own identity. It was essentially tribal in nature, and it all fell apart after the Empire’s poor performance under stress in WWI.
Assimilation is the key. Tribalism is always bad.
The US has a lot of tribalism, not much assimilation.

Well, yes. I got lost in the weeds trying to read the article. Does this guy have a solution?
I do know that stepping up efforts to assimilate won’t work. Muslims have zero interest in assimilating. None. Won’t work with them. Ever.

The Muslims need to understand that their green book is not an avoid Hell pass in the eyes of the God of Israel.
Muslims will be held accountable to the same standards as Jew and Christians by the All-Knowing.
Wish he’d said “greed” rather than materialism. To some extent we are all materialists (or behave as), but in some cultures greed is standard procedure.
In my travels in my state, I have encountered many people of a certain ethnic and cultural background. Won’t specify but I’ll say it is neither muslim nor melanin related. These folks are all, stress ALL, mindlessly greedy and dog-eat-dog in their approach to business. They exploit, lie (the expression comes to mind: “rather climb a tree and lie, than tell truth standing on the ground”) and swindle others whenever possible. They speak not for truth but for expedient results. They will say anything to get your trust, your money, your valuables, and some try to obtain their victims’ identities, too. To them, the world is a jungle and America is full of easy prey.
There are honest materialists, and then there are people whose behavior indicates generations of ghetto survival in their background.
They are scavenging in an overly tolerant, weak society here, like the barbarians against Rome. They come out of a looter culture, and lands where the strong and savage survive. They cannot be assimilated.
I, as well, managed to survive public indoc. In hindsight, this was underway in the early 60’s. Plus, when my dad was stationed in London 61-63, my mom and I did a tour and actually crossed into east Berlin through checkpoint charlie. A three hour tour, as a 15 year old, firmly planted the ‘no commie for me’ seed. Lots of folks are clueless.
Street Smarts will beat a Hi IQ any day. He must have known someone tho took a pipe to the head to finally get to the Ah Ha moment.
Academia, in particular, is subject to fads of theories and methods. Anyone with a lick of sense saw multiculturalism was a mess back when Clinton was pushing it hard in the 90’s. This simpleton wants credit for recognizing that thirty years later
And the antidote? Fear of consequences.
