GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — A Georgetown County woman has been found not guilty after being arrested and charged with food stamp fraud.

Briana Renea Hunt Simmons, 35, was charged with the fraudulent acquisition or use of food stamps valued $10,000 or more, according to the S.C. Department of Social Services.

Simmons allegedly knowingly fraudulently received an overpayment of $56,762 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from November 2019 to May 2024 based on submitted forms, according to an arrest warrant.

Furthermore, the warrant states that she left her cohabiting husband and his income off the eight submitted SNAP Application Forms.

Simmons was arrested by Special Agents of the South Carolina Department of Social Services and Office of Inspector General.

She was booked at the Georgetown County Detention Center under a $5,000 bond.

Fraud can be hard to prove legally. It all has to do with the prosecution being able to show the fraud was intentional. That is not as easy to do as one might think. Plus think of the type of jury pool that would sit through such a trial.

Right on both counts, which is why I opined it could be jury nullification given the location.

She was arrested and charged by DSS on June 30, 2025. That is one heck of a speedy trial. This article appears to be dubious.

Sounds like real justice is just winked at in that county. If I am ever hauled into court for anything, can request I change of venue to that county & that judge even if I live a long way from there?

I’m not so sure they’d wink at you, unfortunately.
