Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday met Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting came hours after Mr Jaishankar held wide-ranging talks with his counterpart Sergey Lavrov. It largely focused on expanding the trade ties between the two countries.

The meeting comes amid Trump's tariffs and pressure on India to stop buying oil from Russia, claiming that it fuelled the Ukraine war.

"We believe that relations between India and Russia have been among the steadiest of the major relationships in the world after the Second World War," Mr Jaishankar said at a joint media briefing with Mr Lavrov.

"Geo-political convergence, leadership contacts and popular sentiment remain its key drivers," he said.

Earlier today, Mr Jaishankar said that India-Russia ties are the "steadiest" of relationships in the world after the Second World War.

... Geo-political convergence ...

I'll admit that sounds ominous.

What’s the last time you visited Russia or India?
Or you are just guessing as usual?

“India and Russia are 3rd largest and 4th largest economies in the world.”

India, Russia, and China are likely TWICE the size of the US and Europe, at this point (with Europe sinking fast).

We should compare economy size based on PURCHASING POWER INDEX, not currency exchange rate.

For example when bigMac is sold in USA it adds $6 to GDP. Same bigMac is sold in India for $2 id adds only $2 to India’s GDP.

In reality the GDP increase should be parity.

Yep, and that is where Russia’s #4, and that is even on the low side since much of ‘purchases’ is for crap like lawyers, yoga classes, feminist ‘studies’, decked-out cars, DEI compliance (making military production contracts into welfare programs), overbuilt homes (juiced by low mortgage rates), etc. Back those things out and it becomes clear that we no longer dominate the world, not even close.

"Good luck with China,India."

India can only count on wishes from the US. Actual fighting will have to be done by India on its own. Good that they have 1.4 million troops + another million paramilitary. Having hundreds of nuclear weapons won't hurt.

I don't get the saltiness. What did the US think would happen when Trump & his officials publicly berated India and imposed sanctions which haven't been imposed on any other country and then be told by Navarro publicly in a newspaper article to act like a strategic partner if it wishes to be treated as one after being insulting & condescending throughout the article. All this while the US plays footsie with Pakistan and its army chief whom India directly holds responsible for the killing of 25 unarmed citizens.

Let’s face it India is acting out of economic self interest. Trump will have to use a variety of carrot and stick.
Besides that, India has a long history of cooperation with the Russians / Soviets.
So they may think Russia can help them with China.
You seem to know a lot about the situation. Is India producing this oil or just a middle man? Why can’t Russia get oil from Iran?

Russia isn't buying oil from India, it's the reverse. India is the one buying Russian oil. When the EU put sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war, they stopped purchasing oil from Russia and tried to procure from the Middle East which was where India bought oil from. To prevent oil prices which was around $100+ from increasing further, the US government encouraged India to buy Russian oil to keep the market stable. EU still needed high speed diesel so they said that if Russian oil is refined in a 3rd country, it would not be classified as Russian. They then bought that diesel & aviation fuel from Indian refineries whose inputs included Russian oil.

Now the Trump administration is sanctioning India for buying Russian oil which the previous Biden administration had encouraged. Little wonder the Indian government is upset over the sudden change in the US position.
