Russians have mixed feelings about Stalin, but only 2% condemn him - poll
Business News Europe - Intellinews ^ | August 20, 2025 | Ben Aris

In May of this year the world was shocked by the Moscow City government decision to unveil a grand bas-relief of Stalin at the Taganskaya metro station in the heart of Moscow.

Widely seen as a murderous dictator on a par with Hitler by westerners, Stalin is a much more complicated figure for Russians. He is responsible for the Red Terror of the 30s where millions were shot or sent to the GULAG as well as the mass deportations that still fuel hatred of Russians today in countries like Estonia that were worst affected.

But for the average Russian he was also the man that industrialised the largely bucolic Russian economy, turned the Soviet Union into a nuclear-armed superpower and put Sputnik, the first ever satellite, into space. For these achievements, and others, regular Russians are willing to forgive Stalin a lot.

There has been a wave of monument unveilings and the Communist Party (KPRF) has adopted a policy of trying to rehabilitate the former Soviet leader’s image. A study conducted by research centre Sidorin Lab, commissioned by Vedomosti, found that nearly all social media commentary on the recent Stalin monuments was either positive or at least neutral.

While Putin has said little about Stalin, he clearly benefits from the same strongman image and aura of defender of Russia’s sovereignty.

Stalin’s image is rooted in his wartime reputation in the Second World War, where he delivered a victory over the Nazi’s in what the Russians call “the Great Patriotic War.”

A majority (85%) of users viewed his role in WWII positively. In contrast, Stalin-era repressions were largely discussed in neutral terms (86%), with 7% defending them as “a necessary measure in that historical period” and 7% expressing strong criticism.

American anti-semitEs don’t condemn Hitler. (Though to be fair, it’s not 98% of the population of the us, but the number is sadly growing)

Stalin was MRGA.
That may be why Russians love him.

They weren’t the 15-20% of Russians who were killed by him.

put Sputnik, the first ever satellite, into space.

Ben Aris offers yet another example of shoddy modern journalism.

Stalin died in 1953.

Sputnik was launched in 1957.

There are 2 major differences between Fascism and Socialism.

1. Who owns the means of production.

2. Fascism lost WW II. Socialism did not, and so Socialism continues to get better press than Fascism.

What...they all agree on the official psychiatric diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia given by the famous psychologist that Stalin had murdered?

First thought about the Title of the article disgused me, until I remember what my father told me about being in Munich near the end of the war. He was in Gen Patch’s 7th Army and later in Gen Patton’s 3rd Army.

Late in the war Dad was 20 miles into CZ when they were pulled back and allowed the Russians to take Prague.

Then he was sent in a group of men who were to stop the theft of supplies (truckloads) near Munich. It took 2 nights and that was ended.

While they were in Munich, his platoon was assigned to oversee a group of Nazi prisoners of War who were in work group to cut timber outside Munich. The timber was cut around Dachau. Dad saw it not long after it was liberated. The citizens of Munich were forced to see what Dachau actually was, so there was no dispute about what happened there.

My father’s platoon (adopted) employed a young Russian orphan to help as a translator (he ate and slept with the GI’s). He helped a lot. He spoke Russian and German and some English. He would ride with Dad in his jeep. They named the young Russian orphan (probably around 14 years old, my dad was not yet 21 at end of the War) “Little Joe”. They outfitted him with a GI uniform that supply fitted for him. There were no insignia’s.

Dad got permission from the CO to bring him home after the war. They had the papers made up and CO okayed. My father and my Mom were looking forward to Dad coming home and being married. My Mom has told him it was OK to bring Little Joe home. (she was from Minnesota, she and dad met in DC while dad was waiting for his convoy to be made.) Dad decided that Little Joe might be some trouble and complicate his marriage. Little Joe had seen some horrible things and hated Nazi’s. Dad never finalized the adoption papers.

Mom and Dad never mentioned Little Joe for more than 20 years. Then one day Dad told my brother and I, You don’t know, but you might have had another brother. Then he explained.

My father died a little over 5 years ago at 95. I put Little Joe’s GI jacket on top of his coffin. I had never seen it before we were getting ready for the funeral. We looked in their cedar chest and found it. At first it was a puzzle, it was so small.

So, my point. Most Gi’s at end of WWII considered Russians were our allies. And German’s (Nazi’s) as our enemy.

Russians, full disclosure, my grandma was one, who support Stalin, are idiots. My grandmother taught me to despise Communists.

We are seeing the effects of the lack of free speech around the world, Russia is leading the way that many in the rest of the world are following and it is tragic

“I wonder what they teach about Stalin in their schools.”

Since you asked.

Keep in mind that PUTIN is the one requiring it. Shows how much BRAINWASHING is being done by Western Media. It’s a shame the same book isn’t required in the United States as it would put an end to the Left’s love affair with Communism.

Of course the Russians also teach a lot more about Stalin, most of it probably praising him.

“We are seeing the effects of the lack of free speech around the world, Russia is leading the way that many in the rest of the world are following and it is tragic”

Russia still has a LONG WAY to go to catch up to Europe, and Europe is getting worse by the day.

Example 1: RT and other Russian outlets are openly banned by Europe; CNN and other Western Media is NOT banned by Russia (it’s effectively banned by the West, in Russia).

They teach that Stalin led the victory in WWII, and with him, the USSR saved the world from Hitler. 🤦🏻‍♀️
