ChatGPT Gone Wrong: Spanish Couple Stranded at the Airport Blames AI

Artificial intelligence is… pretty smart, no question about it, but nothing beats thorough research, especially in key situations.

When Spanish influencer couple Mery Caldass and Alejandro Cid booked a dream trip to Puerto Rico, they didn’t expect their getaway to turn into a viral disaster. All of that happened because of the almighty ChatGPT. “ChatGPT, do we need a visa for Puerto Rico?” What happened next

In a TikTok video that went viral, Mery is seen in tears at the airport while her partner Alejandro tries to keep her spirits up.

“I always do research, but I asked ChatGPT, and it said no,” she sobbed, referring to whether they needed a visa for Puerto Rico.

“I don’t trust that one anymore because sometimes I insult him. I call him a bastard, you’re useless, but inform me well. That’s his revenge,” she added.

Here’s the thing about visas: Spanish citizens don’t actually need a visa for Puerto Rico. They do, however, need an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA). ChatGPT, it seems, forgot to mention this “small” (but crucial) detail, leaving the couple stranded.

The internet roasted the couple, but here’s the lesson to be learnt

Over the top, the internet roasted them relentlessly.

“ChatGPT cannot fill the empty cavity,” one TikTok user gagged. “Government websites exist to give you this information. If you can’t take the initiative to search yourself, then you’re a lost cause,” another one wrote.

Other TikTok users argued the couple might have asked the AI the wrong question in the first place. “Then my biology homework is wrong?” someone joked, while another commenter said they should have asked Google, not AI.

Despite the internet drama, the couple eventually made it to Puerto Rico just in time to catch a show by one of their favourite artists, Bad Bunny.

The incident isn’t ChatGPT’s first controversial moment: recently, a 60-year-old American man was hospitalised for three weeks after the AI advised him to replace table salt with toxic sodium bromide.

The lesson is obvious: AI travel tips are cool, but always double-check official sources before packing your bags. And as a general rule, don’t forget that AI is only as smart as the humans using it.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

The problem is that AI hasn't overcome the tilde matrix.

Way pre-Internet, I worked in a lot of countries. I remember getting to the Philippines without a visa and was able to talk my way in. I remember going to Canada on a flight without a passport and almost being turned around...but got in.

It was a LOT harder back then to learn visa requirements. Credit cards were still not widely accepted around the globe (the Visa credit card system was new at the time), so I had to get Traveller’s Checks.

The problem is that people don’t know how to communicate with each other, let alone ChatGPT:

Me: Does a Spanish couple, travelling under Spanish passports, need a visa to travel to Puerto Rico?

ChatGPT: If a Spanish couple traveling on Spanish passports is planning a visit to Puerto Rico, they do not need a traditional visa—but they do need an approved ESTA, the U.S. electronic travel authorization.

“I remember going to Canada on a flight without a passport and almost being turned around...but got in”

When we went there in the 90’s we just showed drivers licenses and drove in.

I was used to driving to Canada with just a DL, too. That’s why I hopped on the plane with only my DL.

Since the Spanish don’t want tourists coming to their country they should be kept out of ours.
