Former champion boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has been detained in Mexico after being deported by the United States to face drug trafficking-related charges, Mexican authorities said.

Chavez, the son of legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chavez, was handed over at midday on Monday and transferred to a prison in Mexico’s northwest Sonora state, according to information published Tuesday on the country’s National Detention Registry. “He was deported,” President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters, adding that there was an arrest warrant for him in Mexico.

She previously said there was a warrant for his arrest for charges of arms trafficking and organised crime, and that prosecutors were working on the case.

Perhaps he was happy being a Mexican citizen. Many Mexicans are, especially if they are well-off like him. It's a myth that EVERYONE wants to be an American. Some people are content to stay where they are if they are otherwise happy there.

Nick was talking about Jr's father, Cesar Sr., the one who wasn't a criminal.

I wasn’t trying to bury the lede, I posted as much of the story as I could. There’s actually an update.

True, but I would think a professional boxer, who would will be spending a lot of time in the U.S. would want it.

Also, Mexico is a dangerous country. Now that there is duel citizenship, it's always nice to have an escape.
