When the utility served its purpose it was disposed of - not even in a humane way but in a most gruesome manner to extract every bit of value out of the poor animal, even in its dying moments. That’s what the horse got for being a “pet”.

There was a small roadside zoo close by the farm I used to work at. Sometimes you could hear the lions roaring in the morning. When a freshly dead cow had to be disposed of, we would winch it onto the truck and drive down to the zoo. Drive into the enclosure. They would open the door to the pen and the lions would come out and jump up and drag the carcass off. Those things are reeeaaallly strong.
