Joe Caroff, the unheralded graphic designer whose iconic creations included James Bond‘s 007 gun logo, posters for West Side Story and A Hard Day’s Night and typography for Last Tango in Paris, Manhattan and Rollerball, died Sunday. He was 103.

I worked freelance and knew the head of publicity and marketing at Paramount, who gave me the gig.
They used that font for the actor's uniform numbers, which in turn inspired the University of Oregon football team 10 years back when they had all the player helmets fitted with dark visors where their opponents couldn't see their faces.
Intimidating but not good for individualism.
Which, ironically, the movie was about.

I'm the guy who insisted that the title of the 2010 film "Eat Pray Love" (starring Julia Roberts) should have commas after "Eat" and "Pray."

I agree. It is called a classic by many for some reason.
He got lucky.
The poster and title of the movie are more fun than the actual movie.
It was the Rollerball remake that got the bad reputation.
The company had blown through tons of money and the only thing that worked was his invention which really had nothing to do with what they were working on. They had received a lot of blowback from their industry and probably thought it was better PR
