‘They have no business messing around with our city government.’
State-appointed auditors came to St. Petersburg Wednesday to begin two days reviewing spending by Mayor Ken Welch and the majority Democratic-led City Council.
Confronting them was a group of local residents in front of City Hall who declared they didn’t trust what the DeSantis administration says is the motivation for looking into local government spending.
Mimicking the federal initiative led by Elon Musk in the first months of the second Trump administration, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis introduced Florida’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) earlier this year, describing it as an effort to eliminate waste within state government, save taxpayers money, and ensure accountability.
But it’s been turbocharged into a higher gear, looking at municipal and county government spending, ever since DeSantis appointed former GOP state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia as chief financial officer last month.
“Look, all of this is … because property taxes have been skyrocketing here in the state of Florida,” Ingoglia told reporters inside St. Petersburg City Hall on Wednesday.
But the critics who stood outside in the blazing heat earlier said they weren’t buying it.
“Their letter talked about DEI,” McMullen said. “It talked about whether we have electric vehicles. It talked about the environment and that we are having the nerve to get involved in anything that might speak about problems with the environment. So, if they were here for what they say they were here for I’m fine, but that’s not it.”
“They have no business messing around with our city government,” said St. Pete resident Diane Willis. “They don’t even run our own state government well. I mean, the governor talked about transparency and accountability was the reason for DOGE.

Sad.
State-appointed auditors came to St. Petersburg Wednesday to begin two days reviewing spending by Mayor Ken Welch and the majority Democratic-led City Council.
“They have no business messing around with our city government.”
——-
Wanna bet? That’s their job, moron.
Big demonstration. Reminds me of a local city hall where every Friday about a dozen and a half burned out former hippies show up to protest .
They don’t like DOGE because of TDS. It has nothing to do with whether or not it will help with budgets. They don’t care. Trump is so in their heads as a Satan-like figure. They will never give him one ounce of credit. Or DeSantis, since he follows many of the same conservative policies.
“Do you need to be spending $3 million on DEI consultants?” he said, perhaps in reference to St. Petersburg’s budget.”
“Don’t you DARE pull back the covers on our government!”
Makes you wonder what they don’t want people seeing.
But-but, they might find kickbacks to friends and relatives.
“One of the programs listed above is the Mayor’s Future Ready Academy. The primary goal of the
Academy, which was created in FY24, is to build a pipeline for the City and local economy by
connecting St. Petersburg residents with employment opportunities that prepare them for long-
term public service careers. The Academy promotes career development by providing on-the-job
training and complementary classroom instruction. Since its inception, the program has
graduated 31 cadets; 18 of those cadets continue to work for the City of St. Petersburg in a variety
of positions.”
$16k per cadet per year.
Guaranteed.
$340k for MLK Day
“local Democrat (socialist) residents” if the MSM were honest.
Edited for clarity/accuracy.
Keep FAFOing, you old smeg. *spit*
Democrat led, not democratic led.
“Lefty Baby Boomers with nothing better to do.”
Can you imagine showing up to protest a DOGE-style review but not thinking you need to actually participate in your community decision-making?
What these people should be doing with their time is, after the review is concluded, make a case to their community as to why the spending is worthwhile. But, of course, they can’t make the case, so instead they protest against the review itself.
The state of Florida is also auditing the finances of the city of Orlando and Orange County.
Isn’t this the “If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear” crowd?
Probably two or three “residents” pushed back. The sentient ones were fine with DOGE.
I’m sorry mayor, but your papers ... zey are not ... in order.
Florida DOGE will flip over a lot of flat, damp rocks
The bugs that scurry out will be awesome.
