Is the Super Bowl heading to London? British ambassador to US reveals 'big pitch' for NFL showpiece

A Super Bowl not being played on American soil has never felt more likely with the NFL's international expansion of regular season games, with London making a strong case through British ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson.

London's Wembley Stadium has hosted regular-season NFL games for a decade, with it always being mentioned for the loftiest of the league's expansion goals for an actual franchise.

While Mexico City, Toronto, and Munich would also love to be in the race to host arguably the biggest annual game on the world's sporting calendar, Mandelson's case gives England's capital city a possible leg up.

'I’ve made a big pitch for the first Super Bowl outside the US to take place in Britain,' he told the Chicago Council on Global Affairs on Thursday, per The Times.

Mandelson's assertion came as he asked if there were any workers from the NFL in the audience.

'I want that Super Bowl in Britain. I don’t care when it takes place but I want it announced while I’m ambassador. We love it, we love it.'

Sure. Then hold Wimledon at the Paducah Racquet Club.

I suggest that Zululand would be more appropriate.

The time difference would suck. Either they’d be starting the game in the morning in America, or wee hours of the NEXT morning in England. Other than that it would be cool. Wembley is an awesome stadium.

So does that mean we can have the FA Cup Final here in the US?

Mandelson was Tony Blair’s swami or svengali or sherpa — the one who told him what to do to become PM.

He was also a big pal of Epstein and Maxwell’s.

Still, if you have to have the Super Bowl outside of the US (and why do you?) London would be better than Mexico City.

May as well. With how much is costs, regular people can’t afford it anyway.

“Biggest annual game on the world’s sporting calendar”.

Not. Even. Close.

The Champions League finale is the biggest single game sporting event in the world. The Premier League, Bundesliga and La Liga finales are also MUCH more important.

The Euros and the World Cup are in a different stratosphere than the pathetic little NFL.

Only a few Americans care about the NFL. Worldwide, the Super Bowl simply isn’t a big deal.

Americans have no clue about how Europeans taunt and laugh at the NFL for declaring the Super Bowl winner “World Champions”. As an American, the “World Champion” claim is embarrassing.

Why not the UEFA Champions League Final Game in the USA, then I would say there is a chance of the Super Bowl being played in London.

Seriously, given how the NFL craves exposure I would say playing the game in London has a small chance of happening, like 10-15 percent.

Start time is generally 6:30 EST. So 11:30 in London. So not quite wee hours of the morning at the start. But with the extra commercial time outs and longer half time show, 3AM local for the ending. They’d definitely need to move the start time.

It’s already so wildly expensive and out of reach for most all fans, why not?

Start time is generally 6:30 EST. So 11:30 in London.

Move it up by two hours so you can have people watch it in Britain. Otherwise, it's past their bedtime.
