Right. And the only reason to do that (I’ve done it - carefully) is because you’re going north instead of south or the reverse.
When you get to the next toll booth you have to pay the full fare (from Miami to PSL or Orlando to PSL) b/c you have no ticket for the proper direction. So it was going to cost him an additional $25 or so. I’m sure he had a Sunpass. Sunpass would have just charged him if he hadn’t somehow turned around.

He was in the North Bound lane. Not sure what having or not having a SUnPass has to do with him killing three people because he decided to do an illegal UTurn.
I wasn’t suggesting he was driving against traffic (he was driving perpendicular to it when he stupidly tried to u-turn a big truck though). He just exited a rest stop going the wrong direction - with traffic - and tried to make a u-turn to correct it.
It’s not like I-95 where you can just get off the next exit and get back on in the other direction.
If he was traveling north and trying to u-turn to the southbound lanes, that is the only reason to do that. That means his original destination was south of PSL.

Again, that is not what happened. He attempted to make a Uturn through the FHP official use only cut through. There are videos showing this. I live in St. Lucie County. Why you are insisting what happened did not happen I don’t know. There was no going through the service plaza. The plaza at St Lucie County is at mile marker 144. The accident happened near mile marker 171.
Well, why was he trying to go south if he didn’t a) go the wrong way out of the rest stop and miss the Ft. Pierce exit or b) got off at Ft. Pierce and got back on heading north instead of south?
