Trump: Putin ready to sign non-aggression deal, wants Ukraine's Donbas in return

During a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following the Alaska summit with Putin, U.S. President Donald Trump said that the Russian leader insists on gaining control over the entire Donbas region

Bloomberg reported the information.

According to sources, during the phone call, Trump noted that the final decision on the territories should be made by Kyiv, but Putin’s position remains unchanged. Russia wants full control over Donetsk and Luhansk regions, even though its forces have currently captured only part of these areas.

If Kyiv agrees, Moscow is ready to drop claims to the parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, effectively freezing the frontline there.

President Zelenskyy has repeatedly rejected any possibility of ceding territory.

Additionally, sources said that in talks with European leaders, Trump expressed willingness to support security guarantees for Ukraine, provided they do not involve NATO. The president suggested that Putin would agree to this.

Trump claims Putin open to new written agreement

Moreover, as Trump emphasized in talks with European leaders after the Alaska summit, the Russian leader is reportedly even willing to provide a written guarantee of no further armed aggression against Ukraine or any EU country, if he is given full control over the territories of Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions, including areas currently under Ukrainian control.

This information was reported on the evening of August 16 by New York Times correspondent Steven Erlanger in Berlin.

“In return, Mr. Putin offered a cease-fire in the rest of Ukraine at current battle lines and a written promise not to attack Ukraine or any European country again, the senior officials said,” the NYT article states.

In response, European leaders reportedly reminded Trump that Putin “has broken similar promises before.”

Putin doesn’t currently have all the territory he is demanding.

And if given he will be happy with that until the next Democrat occupies the White House and then his grab of more Ukraine will start again.

God bless President Trump for trying, but I just don’t see that snake putin cooperating in any productive way.

His objective will always be to reestablish the Russian empire to it’s previous existence.

Only thing despots like putin understand is a boot up the ass.

> You’re a taxpayer aren’t you? <

Good point. I’m involved in this Ukraine/Russia mess whether I like it or not. But I’m not taking sides.

It’s a replay of WW1, just on a smaller scale. Reckless and egotistical leaders are sending young men to kill each other in the trenches. A pox on both their houses.

I really shouldn’t use “both” there. Because three groups of fools are involved. Russia, Ukraine, and NATO.

(As usual, your mileage may vary.)

One of those reckless leaders was Czar Nicky, himself.

Thank God we have so many people on this forum who understand foreign policy better than President Trump.

Either way it’s a loss for Russia. Its military couldn’t defeat a much smaller country that borders it. They wouldn’t stand a chance against any super power nation across the world from it short of using nukes. All the world saw this.

One thing for sure, as far as the U.S. is concerned, I’m tired of us being involved in that shitty mess in any way.

“Giving” Putin territory he already has is simply acknowledging reality,

except Putin is also demanding territory not in his control while not ceding anything to Ukraine. It’s a free pass for aggression. Zelenskyy won’t accept that.

Maybe if more fighting-age Ukrainian men would actually leave Poland and go to Ukraine to fight, instead of rioting at rap concerts in Warsaw, Ukraine would be doing better on the battlefield.

According to sources, during the phone call, Trump noted that the final decision on the territories should be made by Kyiv...

As he does with many issues, Trump keeps trying to split the baby, or (impossibly) wash his hands. He also keeps pretending this is between Ukraine and Russia, or even NATO and Russia.

It's not. It's between the USA and Russia. Period. If Trump wants a deal or wants the war to stop, HE can make that happen. Right away.

The Zelensky grifter - who made it clear he'll concede nothing - is irrelevant. His only power is exploiting our money, gear and taxpayers.

Pull out of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. These provinces are overwhelmingly Ukrainian.

Then the rest of Ukraine gets to join NATO.

Not that I’m in favor of that.

But it would stop Putin from going for the rest of the country.

Just kill Putin and get it over with. Obama gave him the Crimea... Trump is going to give him something... The only thing that will stop a maniac from being a maniac... A bullet to the brain. Bring a gun to the next meeting and do us all a favor.

Deal would have to allow NATO forces, (Euros) on the new frontier with significant troops/weapons...and free movement in and out of the disputed areas. No joining NATO for however long for UKR

Yep.

In 1905 President Teddy Roosevelt brokered an end to the war between Russia and Japan. But before that, he didn’t send weapons to either side.

That should be our position here. Honest broker if both sides want it. Otherwise, stay out of it.

That’s why it’s completely different than Munich 1938.

There was no British/French presence on Germany’s Eastern borders to keep the Germans out.

Today we have NATO in Poland, and Poland is becoming the most powerful military in Europe. They had a very impressive parade yesterday showing off their armed forces.
