This is close to a design philosophy the Russians have used. Take an existing airframe and modify features rather than going to a clean sheet every time. The advantage is not having to reinvent design technology and finding the intellectual database to make something like that happen i.e. eliminate technical over-reach.

The other thing we desperately need to do is get the government red tape out of the way. Let the innovators innovate. We actually did that with the F-15 and F-16 and their records speak for themselves.

The YF-23 lost in competition with the YF-22 a long time ago. Why he’d be so uniquely qualified to suggest how the F-35 should be updated I have no idea.

If it was Kelly Johnson making recommendations for upgrading the F-22 then maybe I’d take it a little more seriously. Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine might like a story like that but it would still only be so much “What if”.
