In the new study, the team used correlation of satellite optical and radar imagery of the fault—a technique originally developed in the Avouac laboratory and now widely used in seismology—and its surroundings to determine that the 500-kilometer section shifted a net of 3 meters after the quake, that is, the eastern side moved south by 3 meters relative to the western side.

My recollection is that the 1906 San Andreas Quake displaced over twice that (20ft).

I had not seen that 1,000s had died in this quake, but wiki is saying 5,000 in Myanmar, 103 in Thialnd and one in Vietnam.

The Thailand deaths occured due to a poorly constructed building being built for of all things, the Thai Audit Authority. Several Chinese and Thai business people.

One thing the earthquake did not do is stop the civil war in Myanmar which has been ongoing since coup by military chief Min Aung Hlaing. (There 2020 election was on the same day as our election and the coup toook place on February 1, 2021.)
