Has Mark Cuban Converted?
X ^ | August 11, 2025 | Mark Cuban

Hey @AOC , @BernieSanders , @SenSchumer , @SenWarren , every Dem should be thanking @potus for doing what the Dems have dreamed of doing, but have NEVER been able to do, creating a sales tax on 2 of the biggest semi companies in the country ! This opens the door for Sales Tax for export licenses on EVERYTHING! He is going to generate corporate tax revenue that you guys only wish you could pass. You should be thanking him all day, every day for this brilliant move you guys couldn't ever pull off !

In the future, don't call it a tax, call it a Commission for America. BOOM !

My take is that Cuban sees this as a gift for Democrats if they get power back. He is saying Democrats should be happy because it opens the door for them to create even more taxes. It's all about more taxes so they can spend more money for Cuban and Democrats.

Dont care, his ethics and morals are situational, not objective.

Cuban isn’t crossing over to conservatism. He’s mocking Trump supporters for supporting a tax (tariff). And it’s a big lie for him to talk like the Dims would have never thought of implementing tariffs until Trump came along.

He might’ve transitioned but only time will tell if he has converted. He shifts with the winds.

As he summarizes it, sounds like a reverse tariff. Is that right?

“This opens the door for Sales Tax for export licenses on EVERYTHING!”

*************

Not a Mark Cuban fan at all but his point is one that we should be concerned about, which is increasing government influence over business. Trump needs to fix lots of things for sure but he seems to be injecting government deeper into the realm of private enterprise. Its a complex subject, but in general its probably not a door we want to open wider. JMO

“...this brilliant move you guys couldn’t ever pull off !”

What El Marko doesn’t get about politicians, Democrats in particular as well as some Republicans, is that they never want to solve anything unless there are people lined up 50 deep with pitchforks at their doors. They want the ‘issue’ not the solution. If they solved all the issues, they would not be needed any more, ergo make the situations worse then blame the other party.................

That's what he makes it out like.

IMHO, in some ways a tariff is like a fair tax (sales tax), which some of us on FR have advocated for. Of course, when we call for that, we always say it should replace the income tax. We never want it to be both taxes.

But on the other hand, how often is the end consumer paying the tariff? Price is set by supply and demand, not by what goes into bringing the product to market. I don't see how the tariff can impact demand. But can some tariffs impact supply (if the tariff makes the cost to market too much for some suppliers to stay in business)? I guess there are some products for which that would happen (thus the tariffs do raise the end consumer's price). But if Trump's tariffs cause some countries to reduce their tariffs and import restrictions, and we therefore remove or greatly reduce the tariff on our end, then the end result is more free market.

Converted? No. Mark Cuban is without conviction. He sits firmly planted on the fence and leans over to whichever side is winning at the moment.

Confucius say, “Man who sit on fence get splinter in backside.”

That’s my take.

On the other hand—what’s going to happen is that ai revolution will create advanced robotic factories with digital twins that will collapse the cost of manufacturing across the board.

The USA is going to enjoy a structural manufacturing advantage over much of the rest of the world for a couple decades before they catch up —if they can catch up—because these factories will be continuously self improving.

If Trump does this right—then what he will do is invest federal resources into making ai factories and their digital twins available to as many american industries as possible in the next 24 months.

Why the urgency?

Sometime between 12-24 months from now, AI is going to become self-innovative. It will self-improve both itself and any manufacturing process it is involved with.

AI will both continuously improve a machine or tool and constantly improve the manufacturing process by which the machine or tool is created.

If Trump has the good sense to get as many American companies to the starting gate as possible—then heck yes— the federal government deserves a commission for the output when American companies get into the export game at substantially lower prices than their competitors worldwide.

Your point may have been valid back when companies were truly American companies.

Today, Corporations have no loyalty to any flag.

Exactly. Anyone who thinks this deal promotes small government or fiscal responsibility or is good in the long run is a fool.

Tariffs are the ultimate arbiter in supply side economics as to whether a product makes sense to produce domestically or to import. If wholesale price + tariff + transportation requires a market price that exceeds what the consumers are willing to pay, then the product should be produced locally or not at all. If it is produced locally, that means the economics of the product are such that locals can be paid a fair wage to produce it while still allowing the manufacturer to make a profit. Without tariffs, you cut out the bottom of your labor pool from stable employment.

I’d prefer that the annoying mook remain a lefty/demodummie. He’s the kind of fool I’d be embarrassed to associate with, no matter how rich (and supposedly “smart”) he is.

He's not talking about tariffs at all.

He's referring to Nvidia will pay 15% of its revenues from H20 chip sales in China to the US government. AMD will also give 15% of revenue generated from sales of its MI308 chip in China to the US government.

Thus, creating a sales tax on these two companies. Who knows what company could be targeted next.

Understand your point as its largely true. However, I assume you’re familiar with the “golden share” of U.S. Steel and the DoD’s 15% stake in MP Materials, both of which occurred this year. Makes you wonder how many similar deals will occur and whether this is really a good path to go down. If a Democrat administration was doing stuff like this conservatives wouldn’t be too happy about it.
