In a letter sent to the Gainesville City Commission Friday afternoon, Gainesville City Manager Cynthia Curry announced her resignation.

Curry served as Gainesville’s city manager since November 2021, when she took over as interim manager. She was fully appointed in February 2023. Curry has been involved in numerous initiatives and developments since taking office.

She helped launch IMPACT GNV, an initiative aimed at preventing gun violence. Her efforts also assisted in further developing East Gainesville.

“It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as Gainesville City Manager,” Curry wrote in the letter. “We have achieved positive change and brought significant improvements to the City and its operations. I believe I am leaving Gainesville in a better position than when I arrived.”

She addressed her four years of service, citing her work improving the city’s credit rating, which was upgraded to double-A by Fitch, a major credit rating agency, in 2024. Under her management, the city reliably met its financial obligations.

Curry wrote she believed it was an appropriate time for the city to move forward with a “new vision” and transition in leadership. She vowed to ensure the city has a “smooth and thoughtful” transition into new leadership. The resignation comes alongside an audit of the city by newly appointed Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia in collaboration with the Governor’s office, the Office of Policy and Budget and the Florida Department of Government Efficiency.

The DOGE team vowed to evaluate Gainesville’s spending and tax policies. The letter demanded the city provide access to its offices to Ingoglia on July 31 and Aug. 1. The audit was set to target taxes going towards DEI programs and homeless programs, and information on contracts exceeding $10,000.

Curry will remain in the position until Nov. 21.

She should have used the word, reimagine. I like that one.

The down town is not a pretty sight. Nice historical buildings, but there is a seeding quality despite the university being close.

She was a DEI hire. Now that outside adult leadership is looking at city policies she announces she wants to spend more time with her families.

Gainesville is a liberal college town; probably always will be. But progress is being made with Governor DeSantis at the helm. Today you don't read about students blocking the streets like they did way back in 1971 (I think it was.)
