Stephen A. Smith isn't dismissing a Wall Street Journal op-ed making the controversial argument that the federal government should investigate the WNBA for its treatment of Caitlin Clark.
The opinion piece - written by Sean McLean, a former staffer in the first Trump White House and in two congressional GOP offices - argues that Clark is the victim of a hostile work environment.
McLean - who stunningly compared Clark to Michael Jordan - argues that Clark's treatment, and what he perceives to be a lack of response from the WNBA, should be investigated and questioned by Congress and the Labor Department.
The piece was divisive - with McLean receiving plenty of backlash on social media WNBA analysts, commentators, and fans; not only for the content of his piece, but also for his 'misleading' use of a quote from Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson.
Wilson made a comment to the Associated Press last year in the context of Clark's boosted popularity in the league, where she said Clark's race was a 'huge thing' and that, 'I think a lot of people may say it's not about Black and white, but to me it is... it boils my blood when people say it's not about race, because it is'. Despite this being the context of her words, McLean used that quote to claim Wilson believes Clark is being targeted because she is white.
In spite of the fervor the piece stirred up, Smith believes there may be support for an investigation into this matter.
'I'm not here saying the case will be won by the government if it gets to the points. I'm saying they have a case, they have an argument,' Smith said of the idea during an episode of his self-titled podcast on Tuesday.

The WNBA is just a subsidiary of the NBA. What purpose would it serve to get involved?
-bump-
Well, he’s right.
It’s a civil rights violation. She is being constantly assaulted for being the best player but being white. Were she black they’d generally celebrate her.
President Trump: DON’T commit more unconstitutional federal gov’t overreach.
I don’t watch bassetball but looking at clips it looks like Clarke spent much of her youth watching Larry Bird clips.
True. Superior basketball players holding all records are black. White men can’t jump 😂
Thinking pro basketball is a hostile work environment is a fallacy. Basketball where money is concerned in all locations throughout the world has morphed into a game of muscle, size and violence to appease the fans. In the US, where the game was invented and changed into a game that the fans play on outdoor courts, violence is just a tool to put butts in the seats. And the other leagues throughout the world have just fallen suit.
And it’s not new. In 1992 when the NBA was invited to play for the dream team it was just a way for the pros to place their footprint on the foreign game. The keys may have been different, the officials may not have touched the ball very much, and the timing and foul rules different, but the hitting was there on both sides. Barkley was the main one identified, but they all did it. And made no bones about it.
It’s not the game played in the 1950’s. It’s the game played now. And that one is elbows, pushes, bodies being thrown around, and an occasional fist. If it is the way the NBA makes their money, and they own the WNBA, and they had Jordan, Bird, and Johnson to get chased and beat up by Laimbeer, Rodman, Divac and other enforcers on the teams for the purpose of beating up a scorer, then why think it isn’t part of the game to get money in the WNBA...now. And let’s face it, for many years the public has not been willing to pay for hair pieces, eye makeup, or even sweaty female bodies looking many times like a fashion runway. They want contact!

Definitely more important issues to focus on.
The White Girl has it coming.
That’s it.
Culture issues are important to Trump.
Trump would be basically telling the WNBA that "discrimination" (through bullying) is illegal due to a person's sexual orientation and race.
I don’t watch bassetball but looking at clips it looks like Clarke spent much of her youth watching Larry Bird clips.
Larry Bird gave as good as he took.
He would basically make Caitlyn Clark toxic and triple any attacks against her.
perhaps intervention now will stop the flood of fans throwing sex toys onto the court.
Who knew the WNBA would become such a source of political discourse, social norms and adult toy selection?
No. Just no. Let the WNBA keep making mistakes. Eventually, white girl bleeds and her career gets cut short; then the WNBA has to fold.
To the praise and glory of God.
We have bigger fish to fry.
Honestly, I don't think it'll make that much of a difference. She's not playing right now anyway.
I’ve heard she’s out of the year, but they don’t want to say it.
