The Godfather Fans Only Just Solve Subplot Which Left Them Stumped for Decades

A subplot in the Francis Ford Coppola movie The Godfather has only just been solved by fans who couldn't work it out for years.

Fans of the legendary film The Godfather are only just working out a subplot decades on from its release. The Hollywood classic left some viewers stumped, with members of the r/Godfather Reddit page finally piecing together one of the film's smaller but still crucial storylines. A post to the forum saw users decipher a crucial detail which would lead to one of the film's most iconic scenes.

Mario Puzo's novel adaptation is hailed as one of the best films of all time, frequently topping best-of lists. The film still clearly has influence, as fans discuss it decades on from release. One detail that has left viewers stumped for years has finally been solved, it seems.

A fan asked: "Why are the police with Jack Woltz's horse? When Woltz shows Tom Haggen his horse in the stall - there is a police officer in there with the stable hand. Is he there to guard the horse? He did not do a very good job!"

Jack Woltz, a minor character in the first film portrayed by John Marley, is a movie producer who also runs a stable which houses prize-winning horse Khartoum.

Khartoum's head ends up in Woltz's bed, with hitman Luca Brasi killing the prize-winning horse. The plot points circling around the animal had left some viewers confused over the years, however.

One user wrote: "Khartoum was a $600,000 horse that was to be retired and put to stud. Woltz’s entire stable was to be built on this horse’s offspring so Woltz hired security to protect him.

"In the brilliant video game you get to follow Paulie around avoiding or subduing many of these guards." Though the video game version of The godfather may not be familiar to viewers of the film, extra details can be found within.

One user praised the games and the additional detail, writing: "I loved that game! I loved all of those off screen moments you get to take part in. It seemed like it was made with love!"killing Khartoum, Don Corleone showed Woltz that his security was a joke."

The Conversation was just as good.

I wouldn't call it just as good. Hackman was fantastic. Some of the support wasn't great (e.g. Cindy Williams). The film on my device had a (purposely?) gritty look to it, compared to the polish GF and the rest I mentioned had. I was also ambivalent about the ending, which has that 1960s "It means what you think it means" vibe. (although at one level it reminds me of 1959's "Anatomy of a Murder"). At no point did I get nearly as involved with the characters as I did with "The Godfather". Even small but important roles like Connie (Talia Shire) were cast and directed perfectly (I had been engaged to a Brooklyn Italian-heritage girl, and it hit square on the head perfect.)

That said, "The Conversation" holds up well as a cautionary tale about a surveillance society that isn't even communist. It warps judgment and damages psyches and human relationships.

He didn't play Johnny Fontane in the movie; the Johnny Fontane character was based on him.

Supposedly the movie he wanted to be in was "From Here To Eternity," and the "Jack Woltz" character was an amalgamation of Harry Cohn (who ran Columbia Pictures, which made "Eternity") and Louis B. Meyer (whose hobby was breeding racehorses).

There was also an episode between Sinatra and bandleader Tommy Dorsey which is alleged to have involved serious Mob muscle being applied to Dorsey on Sonatra's behalf.

I always thought the camera captured one of the security guards keeping folks off the set...

There are many articles, such as this, I immediately guess to be written by AI. The article, almost word for word repeats, but still doesn’t give the reader information. Just when I think something revealing will be stated, there is nothing. Welcome to the AI.

It never occurred to me before how they were able to get the horse, etc

From the book Wolz was a scum bag pedophile. He thought he was untouchable. The police officer in uniform just signifies that he had bought off everyone in town.

Yet...

The Godfather is able to breach every layer of protection as if it didn't exist.

While the logistics of how this was pulled off would be interesting I don't know why people would wonder so much about it.

My only question in the Godfather is “what the hell did Brando just say.” I could not understand him with all the crap in his mouth.

Yeah, but if you witnessed what Vito did as a little boy, it’s not hard to understand why he became what he was.

I had a hard time buying into that being Michael even though it was Pacino playing him, he seemed like a completely different person. Yes I know people do change, but not that much.

I’m pretty sure I figured that sub plot out at 14 years old when I saw the movie at a pre-release party.

“Vito seems to disdain Michael’s war experience, so maybe Sonny does too.”

No, Fredo tells Michael they were all proud of his service, including Vito. No reason to think Frodo’s lying here.

oh man...everything from casting to costumes. “Connie” looked like a cross between Draculas wife and Lilly Munster. Diane Keatons hair looked a some type of birds nest. Pacinos “spiked” hair was just weird. And yes...they totally changed Michaels “personna”. But when they had the “Mafia hit” by helicopter, i thought “ok, now were totally into Bruce Willis action movie territory”. A total, top to bottom flop.
