‘A continual assault.’ How UCLA’s research faculty is grappling with Trump funding freeze
Los Angeles Times ^ | Aug. 10, 2025 3 AM PT | Daniel Miller and Jaweed Kaleem

Their medical research focuses on potentially lifesaving breakthroughs in cancer treatment, and developing tools to more easily diagnose debilitating diseases. Their studies in mathematics could make online systems more robust and secure.

But as the academic year opens, the work of UCLA’s professors in these and many other fields has been imperiled by the Trump administration’s suspension of $584 million in grant funding, which University of California President James B. Milliken called a “death knell” to its transformative research.

The freeze came after a July 29 U.S. Department of Justice finding that the university had violated the civil rights of Jewish and Israeli students by providing an inadequate response to alleged antisemitism they faced after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

The fight over the funding stoppage intensified Friday after the Trump administration demanded that UCLA pay a $1-billion fine, among other concessions, to resolve the accusations — and California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state will sue, calling the proposal “extortion.”

Amid heightened tensions in Westwood, thousands of university academics are in limbo. In total, at least 800 grants, mostly from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, have been frozen.

UCLA scholars described days of confusion as they struggle to understand how the loss of grants would affect their work and scramble to uncover new funding sources — or roles that would ensure their continued pay, or that of their colleagues. While professors still have jobs and paychecks to draw on, many others, including graduate...

Not many would have the guts to take the fight to the communists like Trump has. We are lucky to have him.

Having people like us pay all their ever-growing bills has been a sound investment strategy for them.

so sad. Overpaid academics living on the money extorted by the government from the people who actually produce things. If you academics are so smart design something that people want to buy and get rich. Look at Bill Gates. Look at Zuckerberg. They may be liberal a$$holes, but they earned the right to support whatever cause they want by providing something that people wanted.

100%. For so long, Americans just accepted the deep-state or woke narrative on so many things - immigration, meaning of citizenship, DEI, DC bloat and propaganda, corrupt media, the education-industrial complex, international trade, etc...

Now Trump has kicked-open the door for change.

He and MAGA have conspicuously avoided Obamacare and health-care for now. IMHO - this has become the most destructive policy to the middle-class. "Insurance" rates and deductibles are become absolutely unaffordable. Its also a huge source of leftist/prog/government power

This must be addressed.

We would need tens of thousands of auditors to find out where all the federal money sent to California has gone to. Wherever Democrats are in power all federal money sent to them needs an accounting for because we all know it’s never spent for the proposed purposes. The wasting of billions on the supposed high-speed rail project there, with not one piece of track laid down yet, is proof one can never trust that party with the money.

another once-very good university that imposed racist and discriminatory admissions, hiring, promotion, and financial aid barriers.... all the while importing and enabling IslamoNazis to march around freely and control the agenda

and the college is heavily subsidized by the once-great state of Californication’s taxpayer, too

Newsom and his administrators won’t reform and clean up the mess they’ve enabled

so YES FINE It is wonderful that President Trump is doing it for them

the large amount of federal aid and grants — needs to be re-examined anyway! (((There may be some justified federal spending on, say, defense research contracts (you know, the ones that the rabble and leftie political hacks always object to, smiles smiles). As things go, there may also be some justfiable medical research grant money? Depending on whether it is going for useful, helpful projects or just to keep the lab rats (four and two legged varieties) in clover. Stop all federal taxpayer subsidies for “homosexual art objects in ancient Persia.”

25% of all medical grant money goes to “study” racial disparity in medical outcomes/treatment regimens! Burn all of the shit to the ground. 45% of all grant money (in totality) goes to cover university “overhead”!

Burn all of this bullshit to the ground. Any article that does not mention these little tidbits is flat out propaganda.

Bill Clinton received $250K for a 2012 speech at UCLA; Hillary received $300K for a speech there in March.
Both Bill and Hillary donated their money to their foundation, the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation.
Other Republican and Democrat speakers were not compensated.

Janet Napolitano, the ‘Political Heavyweight,’ Now Finds Herself Under Fire
By Fernanda Zamudio-Suarez May 10, 2017

he tables have turned and Janet Napolitano, president of the University of California system, is now in the hot seat.

In April, a state audit concluded that Ms. Napolitano’s office had failed to disclose $175 million in reserve funds to the university’s Board of Regents or to the California Legislature. Ms. Napolitano disputed that finding and others in a statement after the audit report was released, and on Tuesday in an interview with The Chronicle. . .
