Glocks: modest praise
American Thinker ^ | 10 Aug, 2025 | Mike McDaniel

There are inventors who get it right and those who copy their inventions. Apple, Tesla and Glock are among those that got it right. I bought my first Glock—a G19—in the late 80s when they first became available in America and I haven’t looked back. Glock’s first handgun was the G17, a full-sized duty handgun with 17 round magazine capacity. Glock’s numbering scheme is based on its patent numbers. The 17 was Glock’s first handgun patent. The G18 is a G17 capable of full auto fire.

Mandatory disclosure: I am not among those who think a single brand or model of firearm is superior to all others and anyone thinking otherwise is mentally defective. I’ve owned, and still own, guns made by most of the major manufacturers and enjoy them.

The G17 was invented by Gaston Glock, who wanted to enter a handgun in an upcoming Austrian Army competition. He had never made a firearm before but knew polymers and had supplied the army with entrenching tools and knives. He hired gun savvy advisors and set to work, having no idea what was impossible or shouldn’t be done. Three months later he had a working prototype. That’s lightning fast for firearm development.

Among Glock’s innovations was the use of a polymer frame (yes, I know about the H&K VP-70 and Remington’s Nylon 66), incorporating steel only where necessary, such as on the four, short slide rails molded into the polymer frame. This innovation also allowed substantially larger magazine capacity compared to metal guns of the same general size. The walls of the grip/magazine well could be relatively thin, and no grip panels were required, allowing most people to handle the weapons comfortably.

I was just looking at a Glock 29 yesterday.

I think I’m the only person on my street who doesn’t have a Glock.

Glocks are uncomfortable in my hand, and I don’t like striker fired pistols. Add in the crazy trigger design, and glock is a hard pass for me.

I grew up on the 1911 and then acquired the Beretta and others as time went by including the Glocks 19 and 22. (remember .40s?)

I like the latter just fine, but prefer the former. Fudd tho' it may be.

"Glocks: modest praise."

Yeah sure, now if we can just find some modest ammo... :(

Gaston died, and it seems the Glock name might be getting a bit messed up. Where’s there Tactical Light 2 now? Seems to be a recalled mess.

Being Glock ignorant, do I understand correctly that the safety mechanism *is* just the trigger?

I own multiple Glocks...17 22 and 23. I actually like how they feel in my hand and shoot. However, I don’t carry striker-fired handguns concealed carry as a rule. I’ve heard of too many accidental discharges with a round in the chamber, even among Law Enforcement officers. Couple of bad cases where people accidently discharge when sitting, before getting out of their car to pump gas, etc...they adjust their firearm and touch the trigger. Blam! A year later they get their leg amputated after necrosis sets in. The smart way to carry concealed is with a round in the chamber. The only way I would ever do that is with a double/single action, like my favorite CZ’s, Berreta 380, etc... with hammer down, or any number of .357 revolvers. Then again, there are many who do carry Glocks and never have a problem. I just don’t want to take the chance.

I like my Glocks. I bought a 20 as my first because it looked like the .224 BOZ might be a viable cartridge for it. That never happened but I liked the 10mm. Then more and more the versatility of the Glock interested me, the ability to switch calibers larger to smaller .40 to 9mm, sideways .40 to .357 sig. Good all purpose semi auto pistol, but understandably not everyones cup of tea.

Glocks are boxy to me and handle poorly due to the terrible ergonomics.

I remember when these first came on the market. Chuck Schummer was screaming that they were “designed for aircraft hijackings” as they had a plastic frame to slip through metal detectors.
So powdered metal was added to the plastic frame.

Much like how in the 1960s democrats screamed about those “Evil” 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifles and “Saturday Night Specials”.

Ergonomics is fundamental to accuracy.

Glocks just don’t fit my hand.

M1911’s, Berettas, SIGs, S&W, Colt SAA and many others DO, just not Glocks; I sold my tupperware Glock G17 after a few years. Some times I wish I’d kept it as an example for students (basic pistol, personal protection) but I leave it up to them to go to a big box sporting goods store and “test fit” them for themselves

I own enough “safe queens.”

I think the author meant “Glock 7, with a porcelain barrel that is undetectable by airport radar and costs more than you make in a month.”

Yes, the "safety" is a small lever integrated into the face of the trigger that must be depressed before the gun will fire. It's the "trigger safety." The Glock has no other "external" safety. Nor does my Sig Sauer P220, Sig Sauer P226, Sig Sauer P239, none of my revolvers....

The Gunner's primary safety is his brain. If that's not working, anything can happen.

I carried a Glock 36 for a long time. 2020 riots BLM/Antifa crowds made me look for more ammo capacity. Used my stimulus check and bought an FN five seven G2 from my sister. Paid full price but got 1200 rounds of ammo for free.

Will never open carry any other weapon. Dropped a 190 lb feral hog at about 60 yards with one shot.

I don’t own a Glock, but I do have a Glock clone (Shadow Systems). Not much fun to shoot, but by all reports Glocks are as reliable as sunrise.
