Being Glock ignorant, do I understand correctly that the safety mechanism *is* just the trigger?

Yes, the "safety" is a small lever integrated into the face of the trigger that must be depressed before the gun will fire. It's the "trigger safety." The Glock has no other "external" safety. Nor does my Sig Sauer P220, Sig Sauer P226, Sig Sauer P239, none of my revolvers....

The Gunner's primary safety is his brain. If that's not working, anything can happen.

Glock pistols feature a “Safe Action” system that includes three independent safety mechanisms: a trigger safety, a firing pin safety, and a drop safety.
