I’m 63, single, child-free – and my friends weren’t there for me when I needed them

Several weeks ago, I had a serious health scare. The emergency appointment and ultrasound were attended alone. I did a ring-around of my friends and sisters, but they were away or otherwise occupied. All I wanted was someone to hold my hand and give me a bit of moral support, but on a sweltering hot day, I sat alone in the hospital waiting room – a solitary figure among a sea of cosy couples, with only my Kindle for company as I bounced off the walls with anxiety. While the scare turned out to be just that, the stark realisation that my friends weren’t really there for me when it counted, and that I was utterly alone, was an unpleasant wake-up call. As a childless, unmarried woman of 63, it is difficult to admit how terrified I am of ending up alone and being eaten by cats. Read Next: I tried eight types of coffee bean – a supermarket brand was the clear winner Without the silent contract between parent and child, Someone we look after and who can take care of us, the loneliness wears more and more heavily on me. I find it devastating to imagine ending my days isolated or worse, going gaga and incontinent in a care home. Like many women, I had always expected to get married, have children and maybe even a house in the countryside. It never happened, but not by design – I left it too late. Looking back, in my twenties and thirties, I was about as ready for the chains of matrimony as I was for joining the Women’s Institute. I didn’t want my life mapped out for me.

Very true. And when you lose all your money/job/status, the same rule applies—you can tell which old girlfriends really loved you by eliminating those who won't accept your calls.;-)

And guess who calls first when you have recovered?;-)

Why?

There are thousands of children in Foster Care that could uses a good mother. But they can have a lot of issues, but if the person is strong and willing to help them then good for them. I speak from experience. I came into a relationship with my wife who adopted 2 foster kids who had very troubling behavioral issues.

My advice for this person would be to become a foster parent first and if she decides that she can handle these kids, then she should look into adoption. My wife did the same thing.

As far as I can tell her true religions were feminism and scientism.

Interesting suggestion—probably would have been a good idea when she was a bit younger.

Sometimes that is all you need.

Fair enough. Again, my statement was more general. It’s easy to criticize and a lot of people here do about others’ life plights. Doesn’t help the world be a better place IMO.

“Friends? At 63? That’s not their role

You don’t want to get married have kids better plan better”

That’s where all her old friends are...taking care of their families.

The way you wrote your initial comment by saying to foster and in the next breath saying its problematic. Thank you for clarifying.

She’s not that old and maybe she has more time on her hands now to devote to them. She may have also mellowed with age and have more patience than when she was younger.

If you have Christ and Christ has you you’re never alone. One of the awesome gifts that are bestowed on one who accepts Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. Psalms, Proverbs, Prayers and the Holy Spirit as helper will see you through. The Lord is my Shepard...

Lol.

I guess it was a bit sarcastic, but even in the foster parenting classes that I had to attend, the State tells you up front these kids are not normal and have a lot of issues so make sure you go into it with eyes wide open.

If there’s one thing I could tell my younger self, is that having friends, real friends, is just as important as having a good family. And the fact is once you reach adulthood, it gets much harder to have the kinds of experiences that create the bonds that lead to lifelong friendships, so do it while you’re still young.

I got three daughters but besides my wife, I also have no one to accompany me or come to see me if I get hospitalized.

Kate, your whiney headline indicates why you are single and have no friends.

That’s wonderful that you and your wife are helping these kids. It’s heartbreaking what many have been through.

Mostly true. Sometimes both partners go out at the same time though. If my wife were to die before me, then I would basically become alone. But I do not mind being along. If I did I would seek out some companionship with someone who is also alone.

Eventually, one spouse dies, the children are away and can’t be bothered.

That’s so sad. On another thread I was lamenting that one of the reasons healthcare is so expensive for the elderly is that the children don’t shoulder the burden, as they should. IMHO a child is just as responsible for their parents, as the parents were to them when they were raising them.

I have also found that supermarket coffee beans are pretty good.
It’s nice to have someone validate my opinion. :)

I am unvaxxed and my husband got the Pfizer two-shot in 2021.

Both of us got COVID. For my husband it was like a typical cold. For me it was a dry cough and fatigue for three days.

This broad can go straight to hell.
