Mel Gibson's Sequel to 'Passion of the Christ' Finally Gets Release Date

Academy Award-winning director Mel Gibson's sequel to what many consider to be the greatest and most financially successful faith-based films of all time — "The Passion of the Christ" — has finally been given a significant update. And it's good news for fans of Gibson and the original film.

"The Passion" isn't just getting one sequel, but two, both of which will be released within months of each other. Lionsgate Films announced the release on Wednesday. "The Resurrection of the Christ" will be released in two parts.

Part one will hit theaters on Good Friday, March 26, 2027. Part two will be released six weeks later on May 6, 2027. The latter date marks the celebration of Ascension Day, which is when the risen Christ returned to heaven, where He was crowned King of Kings and took His place at the right hand of the Father.

The film was first announced on May 15. Lionsgate revealed it would be partnering up with Gibson's Icon Productions to make the two sequels.

“For many, many people across the globe, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless,” Adam Fogelson, the current chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, remarked in a press release about the partnership.

Gibson, speaking on his partnership with the studio, said, “Lionsgate’s brave, innovative spirit and nimble, can-do attitude have inspired me for a long time, and I couldn’t think of a more perfect distributor for ‘The Resurrection of the Christ.’”

When the first film hit theaters in 2004, it made a staggering $80 million on opening weekend against a budget of only $30 million.

We loved that series! We binge watched it, and just like when finishing a great book, were sad to see it end.

In this case, it was anything but gratuitous.

As you can tell by my signature, I’m a fan of PoI. LOVE that show - so very timely, especially today, with government / corporate surveillance.

And?

The point WAS for Jesus to die.

My point is that Jesus would have died way sooner under the abuse Mel Gibson showed.

I went to see The Passion of The Christ with a group of men from a men’s ministry that I’m part of. The theater was crowded, so wasn’t able to sit with my friends.

I sat near two men who were seminary students.

Part way through the movie, when Jesus was being whipped, I asked God, “Is my heart so cold? I’m not feeling a thing.”

Several minutes later, I heard some man in my area wailing at the top of his lungs. Believe it or not, I soon realized that was me! I couldn’t stop. I wailed through the rest of the show.

The two seminary students assumed I was convicted of my sins. But that wasn’t it. I couldn’t deal with what my beloved Jesus was subjected to.

When the movie was over, the theater staff came in to clean up. But no one was moving. They stood there, not sure what to do. When people finally exited the theater, people were saying to each other, “Look at their faces! This is going to be impactful.”

I bought a DVD of the movie, but I’ve never had the nerve to watch it again.

I look forward to these two movies.

For many years my FR tagline was “Thanks, Mel. I needed that.”

I don’t think Gibson addressed how bad it really was.

Scripture tells us they plucked out His bread. That wasn’t shown. And I think the beating covered far more than His back.

That having been said, I know my Lord went willingly through unspeakable horror and torment so this unworthy one could be rescued.

That is the height of His Glory. It's difficult to reconcile the anguish in my heart with the gratitude and awe for what He did.

(NASB) behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”

6 And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, ...

Revelation 5:5-6

The Lion IS The Lamb.

It had an excellent ending although we knew “John” would not make it through the last challenge.

I’ve binge-watched the complete series 3x...and expect I’ll watch it again...soon.

Fun fact...
John Nolan, who played “John Greer” is the uncle of series creator, Jonathan Nolan.

Expectations will be so high for these films, I have no idea how Gibson will meet them. Prayers up for a successful effort as they have the potential to be evangelical works of staggering proportions.

I only watched the Passion of the Christ one time.

We watch it every Good Friday. It is traumatic, but so was what happened to Jesus. It is necessary to remember.

I don’t think when I stand before The Throne, I’ll be able to lift my head.

You should, all the sin and guilt is gone.

Jesus, Thy Blood And Righteousness My Beauty Are, My Glorious Dress; Midst Flaming Worlds, In These Arrayed. With Joy Shall I Lift Up My Head.

Bold Shall I Stand In Thy Great Day, For Who Aught To My Charge Shall Lay? Fully Absolved Through These I Am, From Sin And Fear, From Guilt And Shame.

Lord, I Believe Thy Precious Blood, Which At The Mercy Seat Of God Forever Doth For Sinners Plead, For Me, Even For My Soul Was Shed.

Lord, I Believe Were Sinners More Than Sands Upon The Ocean Shore, Thou Hast For All A Ransom Paid, For All A Full Atonement Made.

I think if people really understood what He went through for us, it’d be a different world. Gibson’s movie is probably thye first one to come close.

he’ll be 21 years older.

Can the makeup department make him appear to be 33?
