Just on another note, Amazon Prime movie: “The Last Rifleman “ was well done and worth a watch. Kleenex a good idea.

Just made me hungry, is all.

🤣
So I’m going to say the first one, but only because it’s the first one you read and the ending hasn’t been given away yet. By the time you read the second, you know the twist. Anyway, neat concept!

I’d vote for #2 because I am saturated with global warming crud.

Go with the first. You can incorporate something like this:

(Regarding Pompeii) "They moved next to Vesuvius. They knew what they were getting into. Let them get covered in ash!"

I like the second version better. It’s less preachy, or like a predictable, Ping Pong/ Metronome rhythm of dialog. The description of SAL is interesting, learning what a “day’s” routine requires him to set up for his continued life.
The notion of overall timelessness is interesting. Humans are used to clear, tight schedules and expectations. We observe or celebrate certain markers of time, birthdays, anniversaries, memorials, paydays.
What to do when nothing really changes outside of the sun’s presence, followed by the lack of a sun’s presence.
That brings us back to Sun Worship, so easy, even a Caveman would consider doing it.

I like the first one better. AIs can mimic arguing better than mimic being bored.

I think I like #1 more because of the fact that SAL has no hands. What happens when they really, REALLY need to do something that requires hands in order to stay functional? To me, it’s the more open-ended story of the two, and has good tension/conflict potential, especially if you introduce a deadline to them acting.
#2 opens the question, how did they accidentally kill everyone off, but it’s less open-ended. Once we know the answer, then we know.

#2 - enough with climate change....
