Same language, so same money, bro, right?
So here’s another cringe-filled episode of the never-ending series of “Please Google before you travel”. A viral clip from the Stiff Socks podcast has set social media ablaze (and no, not because it dropped wisdom).
One of the hosts casually shared a story about trying to pay for a taxi in Spain using Mexican pesos, because, you know, “they both speak Spanish.” Yeah, really.
“I figured it would work with pesos!”
“When I was in Mexico, I used pesos. They speak Spanish in Spain too, so I figured it would work,” he said.
His co-host, stunned and probably seriously reconsidering their friendship and their partnership, hit back: “The language doesn’t dictate the currency, bro.” The first guy doubled down with a now-iconic: “Well, it should.”
The Internet hits back: “In Italy we don’t have money, we pay in pasta!”
The internet did what it does best: roasted him alive.
TikTok users piled on with biting sarcasm. “In Spain we pay with churros and ham,” joked one. Another chimed in: “In Italy we don’t even have money, we pay for everything in pasta.”
“So you pay in pounds in New York, because they speak English?” asked someone. Another one added: “In Sweden we don’t use money, we just trade Ikea instruction manuals.”
Jokes aside, why, God, why? But behind all these jokes and memes (let’s hope the host was just being ironic, btw) is an old conversation, one that won’t die: how is it possible that so many American travellers know so little about the rest of the world?
Whether it’s lack of education, cultural bubble, or just podcast banter gone wrong, this one struck a nerve. “Seriously, is it illegal to study in the United States?” one commenter sarcastically asked.
Still, credit where it’s due, the moment was pure comedy gold.

On convoy from Holland I tried to buy some coffee from a German girl running the reforger refreshment stop stand, I asked her if she accepted Dutch money and she snapped at me, saying “they’re German aren’t they” in a really nasty voice, that was my first introduction to Germany.
I’ve never been anywhere that wouldn’t accept American money, including Hanoi.
In Idaho we use potatoes. Plays hell with the wallet.
I learned the hard way.
Back in the final days of separate currency in all of the EU when they were double pricing in Euros but still using the local currencies, I asked if they would take my DMs in Holland. They were happy to do so, but said they would have to give change in the local currency, which was fine with me. I still have the colorful Dutch currency.
I unknowingly made a similar mistake one time in Germany tried to use an Austrian Mark to pay for an item instead of a German Mark. This was before the Euro became the standard.............
Lot of research went into THAT trip.

Yes but hopefully the only interaction is viewing them on youtube videos or reading about them here on FR. That’s the ideal.
A Swiss guy, looking for directions, pulls up at a bus stop where two Americans are waiting. “Sprechen Sie Deutsch?” he asks. The two Americans just stare at him. “Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?” he tries. The two continue to stare. “Parlare Italiano?” No response. “Hablan ustedes Espanol?” Still nothing. The Swiss guy drives off, extremely disgusted. The first American turns to the second and says, “Y’know, maybe we should learn a foreign language.” “Why?” says the other. “That guy knew four languages, and it didn’t do him any good.”
Does that mean I can also use Filipino Pesos?
Obviously, she could tell what you were like.
That didn’t make any sense, but don’t stalk, and don’t carry your grudges and anger from one thread to another.
