Homeless Man Saves Child With Autism From Busy Street

The 6-year-old ran from her home to a downtown bridge

A young family says a Green Bay man is a hero after saving their daughter from a busy road.

“He didn’t even think. Once he realized what my mom was saying, he took off running after her, ran into traffic, just selflessly risked his life,” Faith Roberts said.

The 6-year-old has autism and got away from the family while they were moving in downtown Green Bay.

Roberts and her family were in the middle of moving from downtown Green Bay near Bond St. Her mom came to help take care of the kids -- 7-year-old triplets and a 6-year-old daughter, who all have some form of special needs.

Roberts was at the new house. As the grandmother was getting the kids in the car to join her, the youngest took off running.

“She elopes and she thinks it’s funny. It becomes a game of chase. So it’s a kind of like a dog: If you run, they’ll chase you; if you chase her, she’ll run,” her mom said.

Panic set in. In no time, 6-year-old Honeretta made it to the Main Street Bridge, where she ran into the road.

“In my mind, there’s water over here, there’s a bridge over here, there’s a busy street over here, and as I’m running she’s got a half block lead over me,” grandmother Tynetta Johnson said.

Johnson told us she was yelling for anyone to help. That’s when she saw a man run into the street, stop traffic, and save her granddaughter.

“Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,” Johnson reacted. “He didn’t think about himself. He thought about her.”

Roberts said, “That’s the guy right there. That’s the guy that caught her. And we saw Weldon, and he was just like, ‘Happy to help. Happy I was there.’ And I’m like, let me pay you, let me do something, and he was like, ‘No, I don’t want anything. I was just happy to help.’ And I mean, my mom was screaming and everybody was just looking at her like she was crazy; nobody would help.”

The family of a 6-year-old girl with autism calls Weldon Tucker a hero for stopping traffic to save their daughter.

That family is so grateful he stepped in to help, and Faith wanted to find this man and thank him.

She learned his name is Weldon and he’s working through homelessness, getting help from the NEW Community Shelter.

The family says they feel Weldon doesn’t fully grasp the difference he made.

We found Weldon Tucker, and the family was right. He is incredibly humble about the situation.

“I just do my best, and I hope, I hope in anybody’s situation like that somebody would do the same. I understand that. I’m so used to doing helpful things, when I hear they were, it’s hard to get the feedback, because I’m not used to it all the time,“ he said.

The family reached out to Action 2 News, wanting to make sure Weldon got recognition for what he did, telling us he’s a hero and they’re so grateful he’s here in our community -- and more importantly that he did something when he found himself in the right place at the right time.

Great story for the day! Good on him for doing it and good on the family for calling the news to make sure people knew.
