On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced that he was contemplating a significant increase in tariffs on Indian imports within the next 24 hours due to India's procurement of Russian oil. Trump remarked in a CNBC interview that India has not been a favourable trading partner, pointing out that while India conducts extensive trade with the US, the US does not reciprocate. He added that although the tariff was initially set at 25 per cent, he expected to increase it substantially within a day due to India's purchase of Russian oil.
"India has not been a good trading partner, because they do a lot of business with us, but we don't do business with them. So we settled on 25 per cent, but I think I'm going to raise that very substantially over the next 24 hours, because they're buying Russian oil," he told CNBC in a televised interview.

Don’t threaten a tariff. Just threaten to revoke all H1Bs immediately if they do not comply.
India may have the worst tariff regime in the world. Incredibly complex and protectionist. Worse than even China. And I wonder if their elected officials have the political power or will to change it. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Trump made such a big push to create a strategic alliance with India and now he’s going after them.

Tea is a big deal for me, but peace is a bigger one. So many countries are literally funding the Russia-Ukraine bloodshed.
Hopefully h1b / student visas get cut back by a lot . Though that might take awhile for businesses to get replacements. I’d give them a month or so
Microsoft is laying off about 9,000 employees after applying to fill thousands of foreign worker positions in the months leading up to the mass layoffs, according to a Washington Examiner analysis of U.S. Department of Labor data.
DOL quarterly statistics show that Microsoft submitted 4,776 labor condition applications, a prerequisite for filing H-1B visa petitions, between September and March, indicating to the U.S. government that it intends to fill 14,181 positions with foreign workers this fiscal year. The filings, however, include extensions to existing employment (3,680), petition amendments (285), and transfers (487), not just new H-1B hires, although the number of new foreign worker hires (9,738) was still high.

Why is it ok for the US to dictate India’s foreign and economic policy? The very idea is pure arrogance on the part of the US. Instead, if we really want this conflict to end, we should be sitting down and asking Putin what he needs. If we want something, we need to make sure Russia’s needs are met. If the US were in Russia’s situation we wouldn’t compromise either.

The US isn't "dictating" India's foreign and economic policy. We're merely setting our own foreign and economic policy. We have certain conditions our trading partners must meet or we don't wish to trade with them.
We just need to shift the financial motivation. We can do that by charging a fee for each H1b work visa per year that ensures foreign workers are MORE EXPENSIVE than American workers. That one step will result in a large increase in Americans' employment AND an estimated 30% increase in wages in affected industries (Tech, Finance, etc).
Trump could do 30 or 35% - beyond that and H1B ranks will be filled with spies and tech thieves.

Good idea. I wonder how much the annual fee should be. I’d add to the Chinese ones too.
Trump could probably do it to student visas too which would make liberals happy since now colleges couldn’t just charge outrageous tuitions because they know they can just import foreigners who pay full ride. (I know liberals will never be happy though)
Regardless, the US approach toward Russia is clearly wrong, and extremely hypocritical.
So Trump’s tariff threat has nothing to do with pressuring India to change certain foreign and economic policies?
Congress passed the H1B law, not India.
With everything I read, hear and see...that situation is becoming worse than the southern border.
