A Brazilian jiu-jitsu studio in San Jose is recovering after being a victim of a hit-and-run collision over the weekend. According to the San Jose Police Department, a vehicle crashed into Caio Terra Academy at 4:03 p.m. on Sunday.
The studio, located on Park Avenue and Sunol Street, did not report any injuries. No one was inside the studio at the time of the crash. As of Monday afternoon, the hit-and-run driver remains at large. SJPD said the driver was involved in a separate collision with another vehicle prior.
The outside brick walls, framing, glass, and mats were “all destroyed,” Caio Terra Academy Director Nick Haloski tells KRON4. The repairs will cost the business about $50,000.
According to Haloski, a truck ran a stop sign before crashing into the studio.
Even after dealing with the crash less than 24 hours ago, Caio Terra Academy was open for training on Monday. The BJJ studio posted photos of the damage on its Instagram page.
“Despite this, we are open today,” the studio wrote in an Instagram post Monday morning. “Full schedule, thanks to everyone who came out yesterday to help make that possible!!”
San Jose is a known hot spot in the mixed martial arts community with many of the top professional fighters training out of the South Bay city — most notably the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) gym with former UFC champions having trained there.
Caio Terra Academy is owned by 12-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Caio Terra. The gym has more than 16,000 followers on Instagram.
“Sometimes in life things go your way, and sometimes someone crashes a car through your dream. Luckily no one was hurt and we can rebuild,” Terra wrote in a social media post. “Thanks to everyone who came out to help clean up, and to @pdsanjose for doing an amazing job. The guy drove off but they have his license and a video of him so it’s only a matter of time!”
You have to listen to your car-tra.
