Amazon to Develop ‘Joseph of Egypt’ Biblical Series With ‘The Chosen’s’ Dallas Jenkins

Amazon MGM Studios is building on its partnership with “The Chosen” creator Dallas Jenkins with a series centered on the Biblical figure Joseph and his time in Egypt.

Jenkins is attached to executive produce the series, titled “Joseph of Egypt,” under his 5&2 Studios banner. Craig Wright will serve as writer and executive producer on the project, which is currently in development.

The official logline for the show states, “Betrayed by jealous brothers, Joseph defies all expectations and rises to incredible power in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. But when his past catches up with him, he is confronted with the ultimate test.”

The show falls under Jenkins’ and 5&2’s multi-faceted deal with Amazon MGM Studios, which was announced in February along with Amazon’s acquisition of exclusive U.S. streaming rights to and a theatrical release of new installments of “The Chosen.” In an interview with Variety in September 2024, Jenkins first revealed plans for a Joseph series as well as a multi-season series on the story of Moses.

In the Book of Genesis, Joseph is the son of Jacob and Rachel who is sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers. But his ability to successfully interpret the Pharaoh’s dreams, which saves Egypt from a terrible famine, earns him favor and position. His story has been told onscreen numerous times, while the story also serves as the basis for the iconic musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

This also marks the latest Biblical series Amazon has been involved with of late.

“But when his past catches up with him...”

Are they talking about Potiphar’s wife?

I believe they are talking about when his brothers arrived needing help would he treat them the way they treated him. I believe did originally pretend not to know who they were and accused them of being spies.

That would be their past catching up to them.

My Favorite OT Bible story.

It would make a great series, but I have my reservations about Jenkins.

Not a fan of "The Chosen" because of the excess and annoying (to me) creative license they take with the biblical text (Not saying no one should watch it, it'd just not for me. YMMV). This seem like it might be more of the same.

There was already a TV movie of the story of Joseph made back in 1995 called "Joseph" which was produced by Turner Broadcasting with Ben Kingsley (as Potiphar) and Martin Landau (as Jacob) that is surprisingly true to the biblical narrative and extremely well done. If you can get ahold of a copy of that, I HIGHLY recommend it. It is available on YouTube.

Joseph (full movie)

I will be sure to check out the film thank you, for the legendary actors alone.

Have only seen one episode of The Chosen. Hopefully both production value and Scriptural content will keep improving with time.

I know Jesus is played by a Catholic, and Dallas Jenkins is Evangelical…

They film in Utah(?) Is that why?

Don’t want to speak for the other poster you were asking, but it would probably be things like this and more:

Well, yes, those are valid points.

But it’s mainly because Jenkins takes such liberties with Scripture, and creates whole scenarios that are un-Biblical. I’ve read the entire Bible through at least 40 times (once a year for 40 years, so I’m not just saying!) and so, perhaps I’m oversensitive to the additions to the actual Biblical account.

Franco Zefferelli did a decent job with “Jesus of Nazareth”, and was able to stretch it out to 12 hours. I did notice a few “extra-biblical” bits in that too, but they were’t wild and crazy speculations like in “The Chosen”.

Perhaps the most egregious example in The Chosen was Jesus asking his disciples for advice on what He should say in The Sermon on the Mount.

I won’t even go into Matthew being afflicted with Aspberger’s.

There are folks on FR whom I love and care about, who will vehemently disagree with me, and I really don’t want to get into a flame war with people I love, so I’ll just end my critique here.

God Bless You, FRiend.

The theme of “Forgiveness” is a tough one.

The Story of Joseph shows that we CAN forgive, but the people who have sinned against us really need to have insight into the damage and hurt they've caused. Joseph's actions teach his brothers what it's like to be in debt to another, to be falsely accused, to face death or a live of slavery, just like Joseph did. Sure enough, when faced with the fruits of their lies and subterfuge, the brothers do repent, even if it's out of fear.

Some offer themselves as hostages to save the life of their little brother Benjamin, others express fear that they will all be killed.

Still others finally realize the harm they did both to Joseph and their father Jacob (who never got over Joseph's “death”).

A half-assed, non-apology “apology”, laden with excuses, blame-shifting, and rationalization, is not an apology at all, and yet, many of us still forgive, if only to keep the peace.

It's one of the most difficult aspects of our Faith, to forgive. Joseph is a shining example of what we can be if we walk in the Spirit.

The whole Bible, especially the Old Testament is laden with those bittersweet “not fully resolved” “not fully restored” situations. I get physically uncomfortable reading about David’s son, Absalom in particular. It gets quite graphic!

__________________________________________________________

2 Samuel 16:

“21 Ahithophel told him, “Go and sleep with your father’s concubines, for he has left them here to look after the palace. Then all Israel will know that you have insulted your father beyond hope of reconciliation, and they will throw their support to you.” 22 So they set up a tent on the palace roof where everyone could see it, and Absalom went in and had sex with his father’s concubines.” (2 Samuel 16)

...Fast forward and Absalom dies...(also graphic)

2 Samuel 18:

“14 “Enough of this nonsense,” Joab said. Then he took three daggers and plunged them into Absalom’s heart as he dangled, still alive, in the great tree. 15 Ten of Joab’s young armor bearers then surrounded Absalom and killed him.”

(He preceded David in death)

33 The king was overcome with emotion. He went up to the room over the gateway and burst into tears. And as he went, he cried, “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! O Absalom, my son, my son.”

______________________________________________________

And to think this is all DECADES after the whole Bathsheba debacle.
