Why is school starting next week with heat warnings in effect in AZ and many southern states ?
Locally, in Phoenix, many k-12 schools begin this week. Kids will be walking in 115° heat to and from home, parent's autos nearby. Any outdoor recess is out of the question.
I wonder why ?
They start early so the teachers can go to CO to ski during winter break.
“In the mornings is is well below 100 degrees.”
I tried to ride a bicycle there on several of those 94deg mornings.
It’s the worst weather I have experienced, though Florida is close.
All part of turning the population into drones, so they know nothing but work.
Now two bread winners are needed to make ends meet.

Two incomes are needed if the family follows what today’s society tells people what they need to be accepted.
A family can definitely get by with only the father’s job. The family has to be willing to forego the luxurious lifestyle—eating out regularly, lots of vacations, entertainment and internet subscriptions, gym memberships, beauty salons, tattoos, lots of parties, shopping on Amazon, latest and most expensive phones and tech gadgets, multiple new cars, tons of toys, new designer clothes, keeping up with the Jones’ living.
If people would humble themselves, cook at home, live more simply and gain homesteading skills and finds a good church, the mother could work at home caring for the children. She could even raise some extra money at home, babysitting, cooking or whatever. The children would be better off and many of diet- related health issues would disappear.

School buses, classrooms, and cars all have air conditioning, at least until the Left gets power again. So hard to see a problem with their schedule.
We traveled on business often in spring, summer, and fall across the south and everywhere we went around a Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, & Thanksgiving we encountered every imaginable junior or teen sports tournament.
Boys, girls, soccer, swimming, baseball, etc.—the 2, 3, or 4 day tourneys always fell on and around those holidays which meant school days off, and a shortened summer break to compensate. Which came first ? The helicoptering kids to tournaments to earn scholarships squeezed around holidays ? Or existing holidays which helicoptering parents put to their advantage.
It happened so often, without fail, I wondered if school boards were OK with kids dealing with dangerous heat if it meant a convenient mini-vacay “for the kids”.
FWIW.
My bet is that the teacher unions are behind it.
add MLK Day, Veterans Day, President’s Day and any others and we’ve got at least 2 weeks of school days rescheduled.
Many SC schools are already in session. More and longer breaks during the traditional school year. Also some districts are going to a modified year round schedule. Nine weeks in class, three weeks off with extended Christmas break. Apparently the kids do better with knowledge retention.
Good bet. IIRC, when Florida introduced the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test) which had a statutory date for administration of the test, they pushed for earlier school opening to increase the number of instruction days before the test.
More likely it’s the testing schedule that is used to determine school start and breaks.
My kid’s school starts on Wednesday.
They start earlier but they also get longer breaks during the school year.
A week fall break, a week at Thanksgiving, three weeks at Christmas and a week in the spring.
I remember late August back in the 80s and I wanted to get back to my friends at school again. But we had very short breaks during the year.
I spent my whole life in Arizona and graduated in the seventies. We often started in September. Sometimes we would have a day of school, then get Labor Day weekend. Yuma.
Because they get out almost a month before schools in other places in the country.
Growing seasons start earlier deeper south.
My son taught in private schools for LD&BD kids for 30 years. They were year round, due to the need for these kids to have a controlled therapeutic school experience without losing ground. They had frequent 1 week breaks throughout the year, to diminish fatigue, I suppose. He now is an associate director at a college program. This is the first time he’s had the summer off in his career.
Because they want the first semester over by winter break.
State law mandates a specific number of days for the school term. The calendar has a limited number of days.
When I was a kid, our school never shut down for heat or cold.
You'd lose that bet. The state mandates the number days for the school year.
