The Gen Xers Who Waited Their Turn to Be CEO Are Getting Passed Over
Wall Street Journal ^ | July 30, 2025 | Callum Borchers

When it comes to the C-suite, Gen X might be doomed to live up to its “forgotten generation” moniker. More baby boomers are working past traditional retirement ages. By the time they are ready to pass the torch, millennials will be reaching for it.

This is already happening at more companies. In the Russell 3000, 41.5% of chief executives are at least 60 years old, up from 35.1% in 2017. Over the same period, the share of CEOs in their 30s and 40s has grown to 15.1% from 13.8%, according to research by the Conference Board and ESGAUGE.

That leaves Gen Xers, typically defined as those born between 1965 and 1980, with fewer chances to lead. People in their 50s held 51.1% of CEO seats eight years ago. Now they occupy 43.4%.

Many Gen Xers say they operated on the belief that if they paid their dues, their time would come. But as they enter what is usually the prime, C-suite career stage, more businesses are retaining their aging leaders or skipping a generation in search of the next ones.

Us Xers are use to be forgotten and passed over. On the bright side, we are so unimportant Millennials and younger hate on the Boomers not us.

Guess who the children of the CEOs are? If you said gen X, you’d be wrong. That is why they are getting passed over in favour of Millenials.

The whole idea of classifying generations as Boomers, Gen X, Y, Z, Millennials, etc. is just more Identity Politics.

The perpetuators of this nonsense are trying to get everyone to believe that individuals in each “generation” all act, think, and speak the same way.

What a load of very dangerous and divisive crap.

I’m just keeping my head down and continuing to work and stockpile. Boomers have destroyed traditional workplace hierarchies, and the Zoomers are filling the power vacuum with trivial crap from the top down. “Paying your dues” is a pipe dream anymore. I’ve seen too many useless people ascend to leadership and stay there.

CEOs and their promotion problems, I’ll be worrying all day about them.

The completely invisible generation is the Silent Generation, they get counted as the boomer generation so that the media can run a narrative of the 60s.

That's so 90s.

The Wall Street Enquirer is such garbage now, stupid article for a stupid paper.

Even is true to some extent the whole supposed zeitgeist of Gen X is one of being looked over and hence developed rugged independence, so why would we even care then?

The best will leave and clear cut a virgin forest on their own and start new empires, new visions from their own heart, soul, bone. muscle, sleepless nights putting at risk all their wealth and pride.....oh, wait...we are talking Gen X’ers here.....so never mind.

There are few “best”.

Just mewing litters of soft, self-entitled mommy’s boys free-riding the great commercial machines built by better generations.

Amusing skit, just over 1 minute long, about Boomers handing over the reins to a younger generation.

Boomers ruined the country and seem intent to continue the destruction. I think Gen X could have fixed a lot of the mess if given the chance. Oh well. Boomers are selfish from day 1.

A voice of sanity and reason on an, unfortunately, otherwise contentious thread.

THANK YOU!

Seems like EVERYONE today is into blame shifting and labeling people and being offended.

Sheesh, how about drop the entitlement mentality that causes you to expect to immediately have or be given what others worked their whole lives for. We had a hard time finding a house we could afford. We had to get a mortgage when interest rates were not good. We didn’t buy new cars every two years. We drove them into the ground generally for at least 10 years. We have Toyotas now that are pushing 10 and they’re still going strong. We’ll keep them as long as possible.

Those who are constantly blaming the boomers, are not willing to start out where people like us did, with a starter house that needed a LOT of work. They look at us now and think they’re entitled to start where we ended up after a lifetime.

Did SOME start out well heeled? Sure. Happens across the world in every generation.

But if everyone focused on bettering themselves instead of whining about about their victimhood and what they don’t have compared to others, they’d be far happier and this world would be a better place.

“those little turds call me a boomer all the time. I am gen x.”

And 1955 to 1965 has been deemed Generation Jones. I am thankful and I haven’t been lumped together with those bags of drugged addled activist idiots called boomers.

I’ve seen too many useless people ascend to leadership and stay there.

The 'Peter Principle' at work, or, "...people in a hierarchy tend to rise to 'a level of respective incompetence".

Sometimes, I wonder if it doesn't have something to do with the reduced oxygen levels experienced by people as they climb the ladder. At the higher rung levels, the lower oxygen level affects their ability to think in a rational manner.

If everything works out, we won’t have a Gen X president either. Trump then 8 years of JD.

And good people dismissed, as happened at my workplace yesterday. The 50-something manager got dismissed in favor of a guy in his 30s with less than half the real world experience.

Good point.

By the way, Charlie Kirk did a fantastic job at reaching out to young people at college campuses throughout the nation in 2024.

Yes, he certainly did. And from my observations, the crowds he attracted seemed to shift from hate-filled to truly inquisitive to outright supportive as time went by.

He may have been a big reason for Trump’s victory in 2024. Certainly not the only one, but not for lack of his trying.
