This "Wizard of Oz" isn't in Kansas anymore. In fact, it's in Las Vegas, where Sphere is presenting the Judy Garland classic as you've never seen it – a 16K immersive experience on a screen larger than four football fields, with tornado effects, and artists and AI expanding the visions of Emerald City. Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz offers us a glimpse behind the curtain, and talks with Garland's daughter, singer Lorna Luft, about what she thinks her mother's reaction would have been.

I was plenty happy seeing it as a kid on a 19 inch black and white TV. I never saw it in color until I was grown up.

THIS may be the only reason I ever go to Las Vegas. I have always loved that movie. Once, when I was little, it aired on my birthday! A memorable birthday!

Wife and I are going there, SPHERE Las Vegas, in September to see this.
I'll post a report when we get back.

It was on tour last year, we saw it at the theatre on the big screen. It was wonderful.

I remember the Wizard of Oz was televised every year around Easter. My uncle had the first color TV in the neighborhood. My Dad and uncle moved the TV to uncle’s front porch. The mom’s made popcorn and kool-aid. Me and all my cousins and friends saw the Wizard of Oz in color for the first time on blankets in my uncle’s front yard.

Wow. I can’t even imagine having never seen this gem.
You should definitely view it.

I’ll watch it someday, along with Mr. Smith goes to Washington, Sound of Music, and some of the others.

Same here. Once a year, on one of the three channels we received, it was a rather Big Deal at our place. The only time I ever saw a Dolly Madsen commercial (!). Hot Cocoa. Popcorn. We really had a good time. The family finally got a color tv in around 1978. It might have still been 19”. The moment we realized the movie changed to color once Dorothy arrived in Oz, we all went nuts. A wildly creative surprise for all of us. Things were quite a bit simpler back then, and honestly, maybe quite a bit more fun as a result.

Cool memory. You drew kind of a Norman Rockwell type picture in my mind.
To: FamiliarFace
Was actually thinking the same thing. I’d imagine the demographic attending a show would be distinct from the usual Vegas crowd somehow... And I think I’d fit right in.
