Rockwell Needs help (Actually I Do) With a Harness, Leash, Collar....

Rockwell as a Puppy. He's much bigger now at 85 lbs.

Rocky is an aggressive mix who likes to walk on a leash and/or a no-pull harness but he still pulls - well - aggressively. I'm asking the very wise and knowledgeable FReeper community what he needs. Is there a no-pull harness that really works? I'm told a choke collar is not good, so I haven't tried that.

I dread the day when an unleashed dog appears as Rockwell will not tolerate any encounter and will react with force. I carry Pepper Spray for such a possibility and am even considering carrying something else. If you know what I mean.

What is the best option?

That’s the owners job though, relying on someone else to do your job doesn’t usually end well.

I don’t mean to be harsh but you are essentially telling us that you have no control over your dog. You need to be walking your dog on the leash around your back yard everyday training him to walk at your side not pulling you along. I’ve done it with my dogs. Its a pain in the azz but necessary.

My dogs do what I tell them. Half the time I just point at the pet bed and they slink over and get in. If they start to beg at the table I just point to the entrance to the dining area and they go sit there.

Either you’re the boss or your dog is.

All excellent suggestions. Saying “No” is critical. I also usually start by leashing them and then not walking, just let them sit so there is no expectation of fun. Each dog is different, but these tricks work even when they can’t be bribed with food or praise.

Some info please?

1. Is this you first large-breed type doggo? Yes
2. Have you owned other dogs in the past? Yes
3. Are you primarily in urban, sub-urban, or rural environment? Rural
4. Is Rockwell intended to be any kind of ‘working’ dog? No

Obedience training where the trainer teaches *you* how to work with your dog is certainly worthwhile.

Obedience is not the issue. I'm just looking for proper collar/harness/leashes. I've received great advice on this.

Thanks to all.

This might come across as though I’m insulting you, but I’m most certainly not trying to do so;

He pulls because that’s alpha behavior and he expects you to follow. He views you as beta in the pack order.

Any successful training should address this.

Signs of an alpha dog;
*leading on the leash
*leaning against the owner
*standing on owner’s foot
*laying on the owner
*sitting on owner’s lap
*jumping on owner

These behaviors should be stopped.
Cesar Milan has an excellent 5,or 6 part DVD, which addresses these things. He walks his 10+dogs off leash and none will go ahead of him. He understands pack behavior.

Respectively, find a good trainer.

I saw that. I’m still leaning towards this one.

If I get a choke at all.

I’m on my sixth male Rottweiler nearing my 68th birthday and one female Rott in 85

IMG-3506

This fellow listens well to me but he doesn’t play well with other big male breeds so I avoid dog parks but I can walk him. I discourage folks coming up to his 140 pounds and he will def attack anyone messes with the ol lady pictured even me honestly

your pooch I’m not sure but he’s molasser something which means he’ll scrap so you have to bear that in mind….if u want a mixing dog get a lab

if you insist u can get a correction collar adjusted for shock adjustment ranging from just a tingle to zap

TSC has them and they work and most dogs respond to very mild correction

at this point I just holler at mine or express displeasure and if that fails then it’s bribe time with a hot dog or slim Jim

I sleep with my dogs and they go everywhere with me and on my death bed if I’m that lucky to have one I want them beside me farting and snoring

Respectively, find a good trainer.

The reason for this thread was to find a good leash/harness/collar. As expected - FReepers have come through with great ideas.

Training was never an issue.

Actually a choke collar works very well, however it must be put on correctly so that it opens when tension is released.
After training he won’t need it as he will remember that straining means his air is cut off .
I have always used chokers . Be sure to get a heavy weight one so that it will open correctly. T.

I also had Scott strain American Bulldogs which are toughest I ever owned. This boy Bedford from Konfederate Kennels would never be suited for dog parks or greenways but he would run hogs or black bear fearlessly

IMG-6022

my point being some breeds it’s a challenge socializing males
