Putin's summer offensive is stalling as Ukraine puts up a heroic defense leaving Russia resorting to teens to fill the ranks.
Despite Putin’s promises, Russian 18-year-olds are being press ganged into the army straight out of school and sent into the meatgrinder on Ukraine’s battlefields.
The Russian despot has made repeated promises to his people that no 18-year-olds will be called up to serve but evidence is emerging that at least 245 teens have been killed in Ukraine in the last couple of years.
New government rules mean those fresh out of school can bypass military service and instead sign up. A BBC Russia investigation found that a number of teens who died in Ukraine weeks after their 18th birthday.
Alexander Petlinsky enlisted two weeks after his 18th birthday. He was dead just 20 days later. His aunt said that he had hoped to be a doctor.
"But Sasha had another dream," she said at a school memorial event. "When the special military operation began, Sasha was 15. And he dreamed of going to the front."
"As a citizen of the Russian Federation, I am proud of my son," his mother, Elena, told the BBC.
"But as a mother - I can't cope with this loss."

There have to be many in Russia whose sons are fighting in Ukraine who lost family members when they went to Afghanistan to fight years ago. This has to bring it all to the forefront again for them.
